GAME NOTES: All alone atop the Atlantic 10 standings, the Charlotte 49ers face a stiff challenge tonight against the Dayton Flyers.
Charlotte, a once overlooked team in the A-10, has surged to the top of the standings behind a current winning streak of seven games. Most recently, the team defeated Fordham, 77-72, on Saturday for its fourth consecutive victory on the road. The 49ers are now 8-1 in conference play, but they have no margin for error, as they are trailed by four other teams with only two league losses.
As for the Flyers, they were expected to be title contenders, but a few close losses has the team sitting at 5-3 in league play. Dayton though, is starting to heat up and on Saturday it made a statement with a 90-65 whipping of a talented Xavier club. It was the second win in a row for the Flyers, whose three conference losses have come by a combined six points.
The all-time series between Charlotte and Dayton is knotted at 4-4, with the Flyers winning the prior two bouts at UD Arena.
The 49ers shot 44.2 percent from the field and went 26-of-34 at the foul line, as they slipped past Fordham over the weekend. Derrio Green made 5-of-9 long- range buckets on his way to a team-high 24 points in the win, while Shamari Spears logged a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Spears is the team's leading scorer on the season at 16.6 ppg and he is also pulling in 6.0 rpg. Green has formed a solid one-two punch with Spears, as he checks in with 14.0 ppg on the strength of 34.0 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Dayton dropped in 56.4 percent of its attempts from the floor and 7-of-13 from long distance, as it coasted past Xavier on Saturday. The Flyers also hit on 21-of-29 free throws, in addition to dominating the boards, 42-24. Chris Johnson led the charge with 18 points and six boards, while Chris Wright posted 17 points and nine rebounds. Wright is the team's leading scorer on the season at 14.1 ppg and he ranks second on the boards with 7.4 rpg. Chris Johnson has provided a nice complement to Wright with 12.4 ppg and a team-best 7.5 rpg, helping Dayton outrebound foes by 6.3 rpg.
The Flyers are coming off an impressive performance and they should be able to knock off the 49ers tonight to keep things rolling.
