GAME NOTES: The Georgia Bulldogs and Auburn Tigers mix it up tonight, as the SEC rivals do battle at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
The Bulldogs have won just two of their eight SEC games, but both victories have come over Top 25 programs. After knocking off Tennessee a few weeks ago, Georgia upended No.18 Vanderbilt, 72-58, on Saturday. The win stopped a three- game slide and pushed the club to 10-11 overall. The Bulldogs however, have struggled greatly on the road, going 0-7 as the visiting team.
As for the Tigers, they were edged, 82-79, in overtime at Arkansas on Saturday for their third loss in four games. Auburn is now just 2-6 in conference play, but it has been competitive, losing five of its six league games by single digits.
This is the 174th all-time meeting between Georgia and Auburn on the hardwood, with the Bulldogs clinging to a 87-86 advantage. The Tigers however, have won six of the last eight meetings at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
The Bulldogs shot an efficient 53.2 percent from the field, including a 6- of-13 effort from downtown, as they upset Vanderbilt over the weekend. The team also did a nice job on the boards, holding a 43-28 advantage. Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins each scored 17 points and combined for 15 rebounds to lead the charge, while Dustin Ware chipped in with 10 points. Thompkins currently leads the squad in scoring with an average of 17.5 ppg for the season and he also pulls in a team-high 7.8 rpg. Leslie follows with 14.3 ppg and 6.5 rpg, while Ricky McPhee tacks on 10.3 ppg.
Auburn made 44.1 percent of its attempts from the floor and 12 three-pointers, but it wasn't enough in an overtime loss to Arkansas this past weekend. The biggest difference in the game came at the foul line, where the Tigers were outscored 20-7. Frankie Sullivan and Tay Waller tallied 18 points apiece to lead the team in defeat, while Lucas Hargrove posted 15 points and six rebounds. DeWayne Reed had 13 points and four assists and he leads the team in both categories on the season, averaging 16.0 ppg and 4.4 apg. Sullivan, a 39.7 percent three-point shooter, turns in 13.4 ppg and he also has a team- high 44 steals to his credit. Hargrove adds 13.3 ppg and a team-high 7.1 rpg to the mix, while Waller chips in with 12.9 ppg.
The Tigers are the more explosive team here and they should be able to outlast a Georgia club that has yet to win on the road this season.
