GAME NOTES: Northeastern currently rests on top of the Colonial Athletic Association and will try to remain there when the Huskies host the Georgia State Panthers this evening at Matthews Arena.
The Panthers have fallen on tough times recently, losing nine of their last 11 matchups. The last time Georgia State was on the floor the team suffered a 59-56 setback to William & Mary. With the loss to the Tribe, the Panthers fell to 4-9 in league action.
Since losing seven of their first nine games, the Huskies have been outstanding, winning 14 of their last 15 matchups, including three in a row. The last time Northeastern was on the floor the team boosted its league ledger to 11-2 with a 75-55 victory over Hofstra.
The Huskies currently own a 6-3 edge over Georgia State in the all-time series, and that includes the team's 66-54 victory over the Panthers earlier this season.
Producing at the offensive end of the floor has been a serious issue for Georgia State, which comes into this matchup netting just 61.0 ppg. Joe Dukes is currently pacing the team with 13.4 ppg and 91 assists, and has also pulled down 5.4 rpg. Trae Goldston is the only other player netting double figures, as the guard is posting 11.0 ppg. The last time the Panthers were on the floor the team shot a mediocre 42.3 percent from the floor, but finished the game on the wrong end of a 59-56 decision against William & Mary. Goldston led the way with 15 points, while Dukes finished with nine points, seven assists and five rebounds.
The Huskies' success can be attributed to their play defensively, as the team is currently limiting opponents to just 60.5 ppg, behind a 41.0 percent shooting effort. Northeastern's tenacious defensive play continued in the team's recent victory over Hofstra, as the Huskies held the Pride to just 55 points behind a 31.7 percent shooting effort. At the other end of the floor the Huskies were paced by Matt Janning's 17 points. Chaisson Allen added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Manny Adako tallied 14 points. Janning has been the top option on the floor for most of the season for Northeastern, as the guard is posting 15.1 ppg. Allen is contributing 14.2 ppg, to go along with 93 assists.
The Huskies are clearly the better team in this matchup. Northeastern used a stingy defensive effort in its earlier meeting against Georgia State, and should once again shut down the Panthers offensively.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
