GAME NOTES: The Idaho Vandals shoot for a rare season sweep of the Nevada Wolf Pack tonight as the Western Athletic Conference members clash at the Cowan Spectrum in front of a nationally-televised audience.
The Vandals roll into this contest following their biggest road win in the last decade, having delivered a 79-55 victory against in-state rival Boise State over the weekend. The win avenged a 77-67 overtime loss to the Broncos in Moscow in the first meeting in January. The triumph was also the third in the last four outings which means the team is now an even 11-11 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Wolf Pack lost for the second time in the last three outings on Saturday night with their 76-65 defeat at the hands of the Utah State Aggies in Logan. An impressive 10-1 at home this season, Nevada is a mere 2-7 on the road.
The Vandals captured the first meeting of the season last month with a 76-68 triumph on the road, which means Nevada now owns a 34-23 edge in the all-time series.
In a game that saw nine ties and as many lead changes, the Wolf Pack did themselves in with a mere 35.5 percent shooting from the field, including 3- of-13 behind the three-point line, in the second half of the loss to Utah State over the weekend. Before fouling out Luke Babbitt accounted for 20 points and nine rebounds, while Armon Johnson and Joey Shaw contributed 19 and 14 points, respectively, which means the limited bench play of Marko Cukic and Ray Kraemer combined for a total of just three points. Babbitt, the leading scorer in six straight and 10 of the last 11 games overall for the Pack, is posting 23.7 ppg and 10.3 rpg in league play to this point, but having fouled out of two meetings means he has limited his own production. Johnson (14.3 ppg) and Brandon Fields (14.2 ppg) have also been rather offensive in WAC outings and yet the team overall is scoring just 76.4 ppg in those league bouts, compared to 80.3 ppg overall in 2009-10.
Tied at 8-8 in the first half with the Broncos, Idaho ripped off a 14-0 run to put themselves ahead and never looked back in the lopsided victory at Taco Bell Arena on Saturday. The Vandals converted 56 percent from the floor and 10-of-20 behind the three-point line in order to combat 16 turnovers and 13- of-20 shooting at the free-throw line. Luciano De Souza posted 16 points off the bench, Kashif Watson added 12 points, followed by Luiz Toledo and Mac Hopson with 11 points apiece as well. Sporting a different leading scorer in each of the last five games, the Vandals have shown that they can compete with any number of players taking the lead in the scoring department these days. Hopson, who recently missed one game for the Vandals, is still the leading scorer for the group with his 14.5 ppg and is also tops with 99 assists, while Steffan Johnson (10.9 ppg) helps to give the group an outside presence with his 57-of-129 shooting behind the three-point line, a level of accuracy that has lifted the entire program to 39.5 percent out on the perimeter.
The Vandals have taken several steps in the right direction this season, but Nevada is not about to roll over and give up another decision to Idaho, even if it is on the road this time around.
