GAME NOTES: Old Dominion will try to bounce back into the win column when the Monarchs take on the James Madison Dukes this evening in a Colonial Athletic Association bout at the Convocation Center.
The Monarchs fell to 10-3 in conference play the last time they were on floor, as the VCU Rams defeated ODU, 70-58. It was the second loss in the last three games for the Monarchs, who are just 6-5 on the road.
The Dukes head into this matchup fresh off an 81-78 loss to Towson. It was the third consecutive loss for JMU, which is a meager 3-10 in league play. The majority of the success for the Dukes has come at home where the team has captured seven of its 10 wins.
Earlier this season the Monarchs grabbed a 74-72 victory over James Madison, and now own a comfortable 48-24 lead over the Dukes.
The Monarchs were not at their best in their loss to VCU, as the team shot just 40.0 percent, and committed 16 turnovers in the setback. ODU finished just 4-of-13 from long range, and made just 10-of-18 attempts from the foul line. Kent Bazemore led the way with 12 points in the loss, while Frank Hassell and Gerald Lee tallied 10 and nine points, respectively. Lee has been the only consistent scoring threat throughout the season, as the forward is posting 13.8 ppg, to go along with 5.2 rpg. ODU is only producing 66.0 ppg on the year, but the team's true success has come at the defensive end of the court, as the Monarchs are currently limiting opponents to just 55.6 ppg.
The Dukes scored 78 points the last time they were on the floor, but that was not enough for them to get past Towson. JMU shot 50.9 percent from the floor and also made 9-of-22 attempts from behind the arc, but the team committed 22 turnovers, and that turned into 23 points for Towson. Denzel Bowles led the way with a double-double of 29 points and 13 rebounds, while Julius Wells and Darren White tallied 18 and 12 points, respectively. Bowles has been the best player on the floor for JMU, as the forward is producing 21.1 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Wells has also been solid, netting 16.9 ppg for the Dukes.
The Dukes might be home, but they should be overmatched by the strong defensive play by Old Dominion.
