Pacific (15-7) at UC Davis (9-13)

GAME NOTES: The Pacific Tigers try to keep a firm grip on first place in the Big West Conference as they tangle with the Aggies of UC Davis at the Pavilion tonight.

Entering the week, Pacific was standing alone at the top of the Big West standings with a record of 8-2, with both setbacks being lodged against UC Santa Barbara. On Saturday night, the Tigers bounced back from one of those UCSB defeats with a 67-61 win over Cal Poly.

Meanwhile, the Aggies are one of four teams that entered the week with an even 5-5 mark in conference games, tied with the likes of Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and Cal Poly. The team has been alternating wins and losses for the last seven games, the most recent installment being an 81-77 defeat at the hands of the aforementioned Gauchos on Saturday.

In one of the more lopsided series to be found anywhere, the Tigers completely own UC Davis with 77 wins in the 87 all-time meetings. Pacific has been so dominant that it has won 49 in a row over the Aggies, dating back to World War II. Pacific picked up an easy 77-61 win in the first meeting of the season last month at the Spanos Center in Stockton.

Demetrece Young made a total of just four field goals for the Tigers in their last outing, but every one of them was behind the three-point line, helping him to finish with a team-best 18 points. Terrell Smith accounted for 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds for a squad that outscored the opposition 16-3 at the free-throw line and held Cal Poly to only 39 percent shooting from the field. Overall this season Young, like everyone else on the roster, is scoring less than 10 ppg based on his mere 38.9 percent shooting from the floor. However, when it comes to the 10 league bouts that have taken place, Young has raised his game with a team-best 12.4 ppg and is actually shooting an impressive 43.1 percent behind the three-point line. Smith adds 10.0 ppg in league play and that has helped the squad to generate 66.1 ppg, which is providing a scoring margin of more than seven points per game at the moment.

Dominic Calegari hit half of his 14 field goal attempts, including 3-of-8 from behind the three-point line, as he finished with a team-best 20 points but still the Aggies bowed to UC Santa Barbara over the weekend. Joe Harden registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds and came close to a rare triple-double as he issued seven of the unit's 19 assists. Mark Payne put together a strong effort of his won with 18 points, six assists, four boards and three steals in the losing effort. Over the course of 10 conference games, Calegari is generating a hefty 18.4 ppg on the strength of his 62.3 percent shooting from the field and 18-of-40 (.450) behind the three-point line. Harden and Payne check in with 14.2 and 14.4 ppg, respectively, the latter missing three of those outings yet still delivering on a team-best 30 assists in his seven league appearances.

If not for UCSB, the Tigers would be operating with an unblemished conference record at the moment and that would probably continue through tonight's matchup on the road for Pacific.
