GAME NOTES: The Utah Runnin' Utes try to prevent their fourth straight loss tonight as they visit the TCU Horned Frogs for a Mountain West Conference bout at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth.
Utah, which is just 3-5 in conference play at the moment, has lost four of its last five outings, the lone win during that stretch being a 71-54 triumph at home versus a weak Air Force program. A week ago, the Utes were dealt an unexpected 65-50 loss at the hands of Colorado State but that is partly due to the fact that Marshall Henderson did not play in that meeting because of a one-game suspension.
As for the Horned Frogs, they were the latest MWC team to hand the Falcons of Air Force yet another conference loss over the weekend, delivering a 65-51 decision on the road. The victory snapped a four-game slide by the Frogs, but still the team is just 3-6 in conference to this point in the campaign.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Utes own a 13-4 edge, having won four straight over the Horned Frogs including a 65-45 verdict in Salt Lake City in the first meeting of this season.
Without Marshall Henderson in the lineup, the Utes were a visibly different team last week at the Huntsman Center, scoring just 50 points and posting as many turnovers (16) as made baskets. Jay Watkins and Carlon Brown stepped up to lead the unit on offense with 13 points apiece, with the latter accounting for one of the team's two three-point baskets on 13 attempts. Not only did the Utes shoot the ball poorly, but their efforts on the offensive glass did little more than bring them three rebounds through 40 minutes of action. In the seven conference games in which he has played, Henderson leads the team in scoring with 13.9 ppg, even though he has shot just 36 percent from the field. Brown checks in with 13.4 ppg in those decisions and Watkins 11.4 ppg, despite the duo coming off the bench for the most part in those outings. In MWC meetings, the Utes are putting up a meager 65.2 ppg, but at least the defense is giving them a chance by holding opponents to 28.6 percent shooting behind the three-point line and 66.8 ppg.
Greg Hill came out of nowhere on Saturday to drop 7-of-10 shots behind the three-point line and tally a game-high 23 points in the win over Air Force on the road for the Horned Frogs. Ronnie Moss missed just one of his eight field goal attempts as he finished with 18 points and also handed out a game-high eight assists in an effort to offset the team's 17 turnovers at Clune Arena. Even though he is shooting only 37.9 percent from the field in nine conference games, Moss is still the driving force behind the Horned Frogs, win or lose. He is averaging 13.9 ppg in those matchups and has delivered on 52 assists, which is almost half the unit's 112 dishes in those nine outings. Hill is up to 11.4 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer in conference play, thanks in large part to his 42.9 percent accuracy beyond the arc. However, for someone who seems to have his hands on the ball quite a bit, Hill's single assist in seven MWC appearances seems a bit weak to say the least.
As long as Henderson is back on the hardwood, the Utes have a great opportunity at a rare road win tonight, just as long as they can keep Moss under wraps.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
