GAME NOTES: The Wyoming Cowboys seek their first true road win of the 2009-10 campaign tonight, as they tangle with the San Diego State Aztecs in Mountain West Conference action at Viejas Arena.
The Cowboys, who are 0-7 on the road this season, are trying to snap a three- game slide and pick up just their second win in the last eight outings tonight. On Saturday, the team was crushed by Colorado State at Moby Arena by a final of 80-64, dropping them to just 2-7 in conference play as a result.
Meanwhile, the Aztecs have been very strong at home this season with 10 wins in 11 tries, that lone setback coming against nationally-ranked BYU in late January. More recently, the team had a brief two-game win streak snapped by nationally-ranked New Mexico on Saturday in an 88-86 overtime decision in The Pit in Albuquerque. With the setback, SDSU is now just a game over .500 in conference play at 5-4.
Wyoming leads the all-time series with the Aztecs by a count of 37-29, with the Cowboys picking up a narrow 85-83 win over SDSU in the first meeting of the season a month ago in Laramie.
Lie without Afam Muojeke continues to be tough as the Cowboys dropped a 16- point decision to Colorado State in Fort Collins over the weekend. Adam Waddell tried to pick up the slack with his 16 points and team-high 10 rebounds, while Desmar Jackson contributed another 16 points as well, but the team as a whole shot just 38.9 percent from the field and 17-of-34 at the free-throw line, the latter stat being the one that could have easily changed the outcome of the meeting. Before being lost for the season with an injury, Muojeke was first on the team in scoring with his 16.8 ppg, which means Waddell (10.7 ppg) now stands as the top scorer overall among active performers for the Cowboys. A.J. Davis accounts for another 10.0 ppg, but it is guys like him with his 10.7 percent shooting behind the three-point line that have dragged the entire group down to a minuscule 26.9 percent out on the perimeter.
Trailing by 11 points with less than four minutes left in regulation, the Aztecs managed to force the meeting with New Mexico into overtime before bowing in the two-point decision on the road. D.J. Gay posted a game-high 25 points for the visitors, one of six players to score in double figures, followed by Kawhi Leonard and Chase Tapley with 11 points apiece, while Malcolm Thomas, Billy White and Brian Carlwell all tallied 10 points in the decision as well. Leonard, who registered a team-high 12 rebounds before fouling out over the weekend, tops the team this season in both scoring (11.8 ppg) and rebounding (9.6 rpg), yet for some reason he continues to think that he is a potential threat out on the perimeter where he has made just 8-of-50 attempts to this point in the campaign. Gay accounts for another 10.8 ppg and has handed out a team-best 69 assists, and he stands as the most productive and one of the more accurate three-point threats at 37.8 percent on the season for a team making a mere 32 percent of their long-range tries.
Losing their best player is going to plague the Cowboys for the rest of the season and seeing as how they weren't successful on the road with Muojeke, chances are it won't happen without him tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
