GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats try to string together their first five-game win streak of the season tonight, as they visit the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a Southern Conference showdown at the Holmes Center in Boone, North Carolina.
Davidson, which is just one game over .500 on the season at 12-11, has won four in a row and is now a respectable 7-4 in league action, thanks to an 84-74 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday.
As for the Mountaineers, who are 8-4 in conference thus far, they've put together back-to-back wins with victories over Western Carolina (89-77) over the weekend and a 75-69 triumph versus UNC Greensboro three nights ago on the road.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Davidson leads the Mountaineers by a count of 37-30, although it was Appalachian State that posted a 78-68 win at Belk Arena in the most recent meeting last month.
Except for Steve Rossiter who scored just four points, every starter scored in double figures for the Wildcats beginning with JP Kuhlman with 24 points in the win over Georgia Southern. Jake Cohen chipped in 18 points, Brendan McKillop 15 and Will Archambault 12 points before fouling out. Cohen and Kuhlman are both scoring 12.8 ppg for Davidson at the moment, but while the latter has also handed out 78 assists in his 23 games, the former has but 17 dishes against 45 turnovers. Of the team's 72.5 ppg thus far, a considerable portion of those points stem from 37.9 percent shooting behind the three-point line where the team has knocked down 209 shots, compared to just 147 for the competition.
Kellen Brand came on strong in the second half of the meeting with UNC Greensboro earlier this week, scoring 14 of his 16 points after the break to help push the visitors to the six-point win. Also scoring in double figures in the meeting for the Mountaineers were Donald Sims with 16 points, while Josh Hunter accounted for a double-double consisting of 10 points and a team-best 11 rebounds in the triumph. At the top of the scoring list for Appalachian State at the moment is Sims with his 19.2 ppg, shooting not only 40.6 percent behind the three-point line but also a staggering 95.1 percent at the charity stripe where he has missed just six of 122 opportunities. Because of the efforts of Sims, the team as a whole is shooting 73.3 percent at the stripe, considerably better than the 65.6 percent by the competition.
Not quite the dominating force it has been in the past, Davidson will have its hands full with the Mountaineers tonight and could easily fall back into the loss column as a result.
