GAME NOTES: The top team in the Southern Conference tries to build on its lead in the South Division tonight, as the College of Charleston hosts the Elon Phoenix at Carolina First Arena.
The Cougars own the best record in the Southern Conference at the moment with an 11-3 mark, just ahead of second-place Wofford in the South Division. However, Charleston may have shown some chinks in the armor on Monday night when it was taken down by The Citadel by a score of 72-65. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the group and was the third loss overall in the last six games.
As for Elon, a program that had a total of three wins through the first 18 games of 2009-10, it has now won two straight and three of its last five. Three nights ago the Phoenix raised more than a few eyebrows by defeating division-leading Western Carolina with an 81-76 decision at home. Unfortunately, even though the team has shown signs of life lately, the fact remains that Elon is only 6-17 on the season overall.
Charleston leads the all-time series with the Phoenix by a count of 7-4, but it was Elon that scored a 59-53 win in the most recent meeting last season.
For the first time this season the Phoenix put five players in double figures as they toppled the Catamounts at Alumni Gym on Monday night. Drew Spradlin hit 4-of-9 behind the three-point line to arrive at 16 points, Adam Constantine accounted for 15 points and nine rebounds, followed by T.J. Douglas with 14 points, Chris Long with 13 points and eight assists and Terrance Birdette 10 points in a reserve role. Were it not for the three wins early in the schedule when the team scored a combined 275 points, the scoring average for the group would be even worse than it is now at 64.2 ppg. The squad is shooting only a shade over 40 percent from the field and is just 65.4 percent accurate at the free-throw line. Spradlin is responsible for a team- best 13.2 ppg and Constantine 11.0 ppg and a team-best 7.7 rpg, but he has just 18 assists over the course of 23 games.
Andrew Goudelock scored a game-high 19 points, cleared 11 rebounds and handed out six assists and still the Cougars were the ones who came out on the short end of their meeting with The Citadel earlier in the week. While Goudelock led everyone in all three of those categories, he did end up shooting only 1-of-8 behind the three-point line in the decision. Tony White tossed in 15 points and Jeremy Simmons another 14 and six boards as the team was beaten on the glass by a 37-29 margin. Now the leader of the program, Goudelock has steadily built his scoring average from 13.2 ppg in his first year to 16.7 ppg last season and now 19.7 ppg over the course of the first 25 games of the season for the Cougars. In conference play his scoring takes a step up to 20.5 ppg, as the team moves to 76.4 ppg and gives itself a little more breathing room with a scoring advantage of seven points per game over the competition. Simmons accounts for 10.1 ppg and a team-best 7.4 rpg, but the group is still being beaten on the glass by an average of close to seven per game.
Even though the Phoenix are trying to build off some positive play in recent weeks, doing so on the road against the top team in the conference is a challenge that they are simply not prepared to undertake right now.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
