Long Beach State (11-12) at Cal Poly (8-14)

GAME NOTES: Two teams tied for third place in the Big West standings come together tonight, as the Long Beach State 49ers tussle with Cal Poly Mustangs at Mott Gymnasium.

The 49ers have worked themselves back into the Big West title race by capturing wins in three of their past four outings to pull to a level 5-5. LBSU, which is tied with three other teams for third place, defeated Cal State Northridge (65-51) on Saturday to stay within three games of first place Pacific. The 49ers though, have had issues on the road and are just 3-8 as the visiting team this season.

On the flip slide, Cal Poly came out of the gate quickly, but has fallen in four straight to drop to 5-5 within the conference. The team's latest defeat came at league-leading Pacific, 67-61, on Saturday. The Mustangs are now just 8-14 overall, although five of those victories have come at home.

As far as the all-time series is concerned, LBSU holds a 34-28 lead over Cal Poly, which actually won the first meeting of the season, 90-79, on January 16th.

The 49ers hit on 41.2 percent of their attempts from the floor and 7-of-20 from three-point land and that was plenty to pick up a victory over CSUN on Saturday. LBSU was also solid on defense, forcing 18 turnovers and allowing just 51 points. T.J. Robinson led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Stephan Gilling had 14 points. On the season, Robinson ranks among the top big men in the conference, averaging a double-double with 15.3 ppg and 10.3 rpg. Larry Anderson is a player that can do it all, tallying 12.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg and 3.0 apg and he is tough on defense too, recording 43 steals. Casper Ware chips in with 11.4 ppg and he is the playmaker for this club, dishing off a team-best 5.3 apg.

The Mustangs made just 39.0 percent of their field-goal tries and were outscored at the foul line, 16-3, as they were defeated by Pacific on Saturday. Cal Poly did keep things interesting by knocking down 12 three- pointers, but it just wasn't enough in the end. Shawn Lewis guided the team in the setback with 16 points, while Lorenzo Keeler posted 13 points, eight rebounds and five helpers. Keeler currently leads Cal Poly in the scoring department at 15.4 ppg, although he is shooting only 39.8 percent from the field. Lewis tacks on 10.2 ppg and he also brings in 4.1 rpg for the Mustangs.

The 49ers are playing better right now and should be able to find a way to win on the road against a slumping Cal Poly squad tonight.
