GAME NOTES: St. John's sets out this evening to snap out of its recent funk when the Red Storm host the Louisville Cardinals in a Big East showdown at Madison Square Garden.
The Cardinals pushed their league mark to 6-4 on the season with a 76-60 victory over Rutgers in their last matchup. It was the second straight win for Louisville, which is a meager 1-5 on the road this season.
As for the Red Storm, they are in desperate need of a win, having lost five straight games. The last time St. John's was in action the team suffered a 79-60 setback to West Virginia. The loss to the Mountaineers dropped the Red Storm to just 2-8 in conference play.
The Cardinals grabbed a 75-68 victory over St. John's earlier this season, and now hold an 8-3 edge over the Red Storm in the all-time series.
The Cardinals have been very dangerous at the offensive end of the floor this season and head into this matchup netting 79.7 ppg, behind a 45.1 percent shooting effort. Samardo Samuels is leading the way for Louisville with 15.7 ppg and 7.5 rpg, while Edgar Sosa is netting 13.6 ppg, to go along with a team-best 97 assists. The last time the Cardinals were on the floor the team shot 54.0 percent, en route to a victory over Rutgers. Jerry Smith led the way with 16 points, while Samuels tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sosa added 13 points, and dished out eight assists in the win.
The Red Storm on the other hand have had their problems offensively, netting 67.0 ppg, behind a pedestrian 41.8 percent shooting effort. DJ Kennedy has done everything for St. John's and is not only leading the team with 15.0 ppg, but the guard is also posting 6.6 rpg and 68 assists. Dwight Hardy is the only other player netting double figures, averaging 11.0 ppg. The Red Storm continued to struggle the last time they were on the floor, as the team shot just 40.3 percent in a loss to West Virginia. Paris Horne and Justin Burrell scored 12 points apiece in the loss, while Kennedy was held to just four points on a 2-of-11 clip from the field.
The Red Storm are home for this matchup, but the team simply cannot hang with Louisville, and should stumble to a sixth consecutive loss.
