GAME NOTES: The Santa Clara Broncos kick off a three-game homestand tonight, as they host the Loyola Marymount Lions in West Coast Conference play at the Leavey Center.
The Broncos enter the contest on a winning note, as they notched a 59-43 victory at San Diego on Saturday. The triumph halted a three-game losing skid and improved SCU to 10-16 overall and a still disappointing 2-7 within the conference.
On the opposite side, LMU capped a three-game homestand with a 77-61 besting of Pepperdine on Saturday. The win was the second in three games for the Lions, who pulled to 12-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Unfortunately, LMU now heads back out to the road, where it has gone 0-3 versus league foes.
As far as the all-time series goes, SCU holds an 80-51 advantage over LMU, although the Lions took the first meeting, 81-70, last month.
The Lions dropped in 50.0 percent of their shots from the floor and 15-of-20 at the foul line, as they posted a 77-61 victory over Pepperdine on Saturday. Drew Viney led the way with 22 points and six boards, while Vernon Teel had 18 points and seven assists. On the campaign, Viney tops the roster in both scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg) and he is also shooting 43.0 percent from long range. Teel tacks on 14.4 ppg and 5.4 rpg and he has been in charge of setting up Viney and company, dishing off a team-high 6.3 apg.
SCU did it with defense, forcing 16 turnovers and holding San Diego to just a 35.9 percent shooting effort from the floor in a 59-43 victory. The Broncos meanwhile, connected on 48.6 percent of their attempts from the floor and 6- of-15 from behind the arc. Robert Smith led the charge with 16 points and four assists, while Raymond Cowels chipped in with 11 points. Marc Trasolini scored all seven of his points at the foul line and grabbed seven caroms and he continues to lead the team in scoring (13.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 rpg) for the season. Smith adds 12.5 ppg and he also distributes a team-best 3.1 apg.
The Lions have more weapons to work with and that should help them slip past the Broncos on the road tonight.
