GAME NOTES: The Oregon State Beavers have traveled to Tempe for a Pac-10 Conference clash with the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Oregon State has won two of its last three games to move to 10-12 overall and 4-6 in league play -- records still in need of significant improvement. It is hard to imagine the Beavers playing any better at the defensive end than they did in Saturday's 62-42 victory over Oregon. While that win enabled OSU to move to 7-4 at home, the team is just 2-7 in true road games coming into this affair.
Arizona State carried a two-game win streak into Saturday's road clash with Washington, but the result was an ugly 79-56 setback. Fortunately, the Sun Devils now return home where they are a solid 12-3 thus far. ASU is 16-8 overall and a respectable 6-5 in conference.
Oregon State owns a narrow 38-36 series lead over Arizona State, but the Sun Devils won the first meeting this season by a 66-57 final.
Clearly, the Beavers are limited at the offensive end of the floor, as they are netting a modest 60.0 ppg for the season. Defensively, they are holding their own by yielding just 61.3 ppg, and that impressive effort has kept them competitive. Calvin Haynes continues to pace Oregon State with 13.0 ppg on the strength of his 41.5 percent shooting from three-point range, and Seth Tarver checks in with 10.5 ppg and 54 steals. The fact that the Beavers were able to hold Oregon to 29.8 percent shooting from the field while forcing the Ducks into 17 turnovers on Saturday was highly impressive. OSU got 18 points from Omari Johnson in that game, while Haynes and Jared Cunningham pitched in with 11 points apiece. The Beavers hit 50 percent of their field goal attempts.
Arizona State trailed Washington by 17 points at intermission on Saturday and was outplayed in the second half as well. The Sun Devils turned the ball over 18 times and suffered a 48-29 rebounding disadvantage. An ugly 9-of-20 effort from the foul line hurt the cause as well. Demetrius Washington scored 14 points off the bench to lead the way in defeat, while Ty Abbott pitched in 10 points. Through 24 games, ASU is generating 69.0 ppg while holding opponents to 58.9 ppg on 39.8 percent shooting, and the defensive numbers are clearly more impressive than the offensive ones. Rihards Kuksiks leads the Sun Devils with 12.4 ppg, while Abbott turns in 11.7 ppg.
Arizona State will complete the season sweep of the Beavers with another strong defensive effort. Expect the Sun Devils to lead this one wire to wire.
