GAME NOTES: Two teams at opposite ends of the Western Athletic Conference standings square off at Taco Bell Arena tonight, as the Boise State Broncos entertain the Utah State Aggies.
With an 8-2 record in conference play, the Aggies enter tonight's matchup tied with the New Mexico State Aggies for first place in the WAC. Utah State is currently riding an eight-game win streak and in all but one of those decisions, the team has won by double digits. On Saturday, the Aggies handed the Nevada Wolf Pack a 76-65 setback at the D.G. Smith Spectrum in Logan to boost their record to an impressive 13-1 at home.
As for the Broncos, who are settling in at the bottom of the WAC with just a pair of wins in 10 opportunities, they were blown away by the Idaho Vandals at Taco Bell Arena last Saturday, 79-55, a huge upset given that BSU had topped Idaho on the road by 10 points just a few weeks earlier. The loss snapped a brief two-game win streak for Boise, the team's only two conference wins of the season in fact.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, USU owns a 23-8 advantage over the Broncos dating back to 1974 when the series began. The Aggies picked up an 81-59 win in the first meeting of the season in Logan last month.
Turning the ball over a mere four times meant the Aggies were able to get away with just 39.7 percent shooting from the field in the win over Nevada on Saturday night at home. Tai Wesley, who missed out on a double-double by a single rebound, led four players in double figures with his 19 points, followed by Pooh Williams with 16, and Brady Jardine contributed 13 points and eight boards off the bench. Jared Quayle tallied 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists. From an offensive standpoint, the Aggies have been playing balanced basketball in conference games as Wesley and Quayle lead the way with 12.1 and 11.3 ppg, respectively, for a group that is generating 73.2 ppg on the strength of 44.4 percent shooting beyond the arc. At the other end of the floor, the Aggies are holding opponents to only 40.6 percent shooting from the field and are watching them shoot just 64.2 percent at the free-throw line, allowing USU to claim a scoring advantage in league games of better than 13 ppg at the moment.
The Broncos scored a grand total of just 19 points in the first half against Idaho over the weekend and were never able to recover, suffering 19 turnovers along the way. Daequon Montreal turned up as the leading scorer for Boise State with his 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, while La'Shard Anderson checked in with 12 points as the other three starters combined to shoot a mere 3-of-13 from the floor on the night. Ike Okoye, one of those who struggled the last time out, remains the leader both in scoring (12.8 ppg) and on the glass (8.7 rpg), but even he and his 52.2 percent shooting from the field cannot get this team out of the doldrums. Anderson (11.1 ppg) and Robert Arnold (11.0 ppg) have combined for 44 three-pointers, but they've taken 153 shots in order to reach that total and it means the team as a whole is now down at 31.4 percent from the perimeter on the season.
Even with this game being on the road and the Aggies using a short bench recently, expect Utah State to have little trouble in this matchup.
