GAME NOTES: Undefeated in Ivy League action, the Princeton Tigers try to keep up their strong play tonight as they host the Columbia Lions at Jadwin Gym in New Jersey.
Princeton, which experienced a four-game losing streak early in the campaign, has lost just once since then and has put together a six-game win streak. The team last played on Saturday and used that opportunity to crush Dartmouth on the road in a 54-38 decision, moving the Tigers to 4-0 in league play which means they trail only Cornell in the standings.
As for the Lions, currently sixth in the league at 2-4, they saw their recent two-game win streak brought to an end last Saturday with a 79-64 loss to the Yale Bulldogs at home.
In a series that dates back more than a century, the Tigers own a 137-84 advantage over Columbia, although it was the Lions to posted a 58-44 win in the most recent meeting last March. The teams will complete their season series on February 27th in New York.
The Lions trailed by 19 points at halftime last Saturday and were never able to fully recover in their loss to Yale at home. Columbia was behind for the entire meeting and if it were not for Noruwa Agho and his huge 30-point effort the Lions would not have even been that close. Agho shot just 1-of-7 behind the three-point line, the team as a whole a mere 2-of-16, but he did manage to convert 15-of-18 chances at the free-throw line, more than all of his teammates combined. As should be expected, Agho leads the team in scoring by a large margin with his 17.7 ppg, with Brian Grimes as the next closest teammate with his 8.8 ppg. Losing Patrick Foley (9.7 ppg, 2.7 apg) to a torn labrum in his right shoulder means the squad is having to make up for his missing production. Agho has stepped in to be one of the more devastating three-point shooters in the nation, in spite of last week's effort, by hitting an incredible 51.6 percent of his perimeter chances.
The Princeton defense completely shut down the Big Green last weekend, limiting Dartmouth to 16 total field goals and 3-of-4 shooting both behind the three-point line and at the free-throw line in the 16-point decision. The Tigers got a huge lift off the bench from Ian Hummer who tallied a team-best 11 points, followed by Dan Mavraides with 10 points as the top scorer among the starters. Mavraides is currently second on the team in scoring with 11.6 ppg, trailing only Douglas Davis and his 13.4 ppg, stemming from 40.2 percent shooting behind the three-point line this season. Point production has been tough for the Tigers this season, the squad coming up with only 59.6 ppg, but the good news that goes along with that is the fact that the squad has perhaps the best scoring defense in all of college basketball, one that is allowing a mere 52.9 ppg at the moment.
Many say the best offense is a good defense, so if that's the case, lean in favor of the Tiger's in tonight's matchup.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
