GAME NOTES: The Fairfield Stags have traveled to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to take on the Rider Broncs tonight in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
Fairfield has lost two of its last three games to fall to 16-8 overall and 9-5 in league action. On Monday, the Stags lost at Siena, 69-67, and they have split their 12 true road games thus far.
Rider has won four of its last five games to move to 14-12 overall and 7-7 in conference. The Broncs are coming off a 70-62 decision over Niagara that enabled them to move to 6-4 at home.
These teams met just two weeks ago, and Rider beat Fairfield in an 88-80 final. With regard to the all-time series, the Stags are clinging to a 23-22 advantage.
There are three double-digit scorers in the fold for Fairfield, and Derek Needham leads the way with 16.1 ppg despite his 39.3 percent shooting from the floor. Much more than just a scorer, Needham has racked up 135 assists and 46 steals. Yorel Hawkins checks in with 14.6 ppg, and Anthony Johnson provides 14.4 ppg and 9.1 rpg. The Stags are generating 70.2 ppg while allowing 66.2 ppg to foes. In the narrow loss to Siena last time out, Needham scored 26 points in 40 minutes of action. Sean Crawford added 15 points, and Johnson pitched in 10 points. Fairfield was outscored 34-20 in the paint and 18-12 off turnovers. The club also committed five more giveaways than did the Saints, who remained undefeated in MAAC action.
Ryan Thompson was sensational for Rider in the recent victory over Niagara, as he exploded for 31 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Justin Robinson pitched in 14 points, and Novar Gadson tallied 12 points and eight rebounds. Strong defense was key to the win for the Broncs, who limited the Purple Eagles to 35.5 percent shooting from the field. Thompson is averaging 16.1 ppg this season, and Robinson is next with 13.3 ppg. Gadson brings 11.2 ppg and 7.7 rpg to the mix, and Mike Ringgold rounds out a foursome of double-digit performers with 10.7 ppg. The Broncs are posting 68.8 ppg while allowing foes to net 71.0 ppg.
Considering the fact that Rider has already beaten Fairfield on the road, it is hard to pick against the Broncs tonight. Thompson will lead the home team to victory.
