Marist (1-23) at Canisius (11-14)

GAME NOTES: Suffering with one of the worst records in all of Division I basketball at the moment, the Marist Red Foxes hope to put up a fight against the Canisius Golden Griffins tonight when the two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foes meet at the Koessler Center in Buffalo, New York.

Having posted just a single win in 24 tries this season, the Red Foxes have had a campaign to forget, yet it is still better than both Alcorn State and Bryant who have gone winless in their first 24 games of 2009-10. Nevertheless, Marist is still dealing with a 12-game slide at the moment, a streak that was continued last Sunday with the 56-51 loss to Iona at home.

Needless to say, at 1-13 the Red Foxes are all alone at the bottom of the MAAC standings and they have yet to win a single game on the road this season, going 0-12 to this point.

As for the Golden Griffs, who are two games under .500 in league play at 6-8, they too played on Super Bowl Sunday and were handed a 73-72 overtime loss by Saint Peter's on the road. The setback was the third in a row and the fourth in the last five games for a team that has now taken part in four overtime decisions this season.

The Griffs now own a 16-13 lead in the all-time series, thanks to the 72-57 romp in the first meeting of the season last month on the road against Marist.

The Red Foxes certainly made it interesting last week against Iona, but in the end Marist just wasn't ready to break out of the doldrums just yet. Candon Rusin accounted for 17 points, shooting 3-of-6 behind the three-point line, while Daye Kaba added 10 points, four rebounds and four steals. Korey Bauer, who was held to just two points as he missed all four of his field goal attempts, checked in with a team-high 10 rebounds. Rusin, the leading scorer in three of the last four games for the Foxes, is the closest player on the team to scoring in double figures on the average with his 9.5 ppg, thanks in large part to his 40.9 percent accuracy behind the three-point line and not his mere 60 percent at the charity stripe. As a team, Marist is shooting only 39.4 percent from the floor and 63.4 percent at the charity stripe, so it should come as no surprise that the program is one of the weakest scoring squads in the nation at only 57.0 ppg.

With a chance to put the Golden Griffins ahead in overtime Frank Turner, who raced the length of the floor in regulation to tie the score at 62-62 and send it into overtime, was given only a pair of free-throw attempts when he was clearly shooting behind the three-point line, subsequently giving the narrow win to the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Sunday. Turner finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds and four assists before fouling out in overtime, while Tomas Vazquez-Simmons chipped in 16 points and Julius Coles 10 and seven boards in the team's hard-luck loss. Turner leads the team in scoring at the moment with his 16.9 ppg, but he is so much more than just a point producer because he also paces the program with his 128 assists, 54 steals and is among the leaders with better than five rebounds per game as well. Coles adds 15.0 ppg, but beyond that pair the Griffs don't get much in the way of steady scoring and that has led them to only 66.2 ppg.

In order for the Red Foxes to get back into the win column everything has to break just right for the team, and being on the road is the first strike against them tonight.
