GAME NOTES: The Montana Grizzlies will try to remain in the win column when they battle the Portland State Vikings this evening in a Big Sky Conference tilt at the Stott Center.
The Grizzlies roll into this matchup with a four-game winning streak. The last time Montana was on the floor the team grabbed a 91-68 victory over Idaho State, pushing its league ledger to 8-4 on the year.
The Vikings fell to 5-5 in conference play with an 80-77 setback to Seattle in their last matchup. It was the fourth loss in the last six games for Portland State, which is a solid 6-2 at home.
Earlier this season the Grizzlies pushed their lead in the all-time series against Portland State to 24-18 with a 90-58 victory over the Vikings.
The Grizzlies were outstanding in their last game, as they exploded for 91 points behind a staggering 65.3 percent shooting effort. In the victory over Idaho State, Montana connected on 7-of-15 three-point attempts and also hit 20-of-26 shots from the foul line. Anthony Johnson erupted for 30 points in the win, while Brian Qvale added 18 points and nine rebounds. The clear leader on the floor for Montana has been Johnson, who is netting 17.9 ppg, to go along with 76 assists. Qvale has been a solid contributor in the paint, as the center is posting 10.4 ppg, to go along with 6.7 rpg.
The Vikings have been unable to get over the hump this season mainly because the team has struggled defensively, allowing 80.7 ppg. The poor defensive play has overshadowed the team's efforts offensively, as Portland State heads into this game netting a solid 78.8 ppg. Dominic Waters is leading the team with 18.1 ppg and 107 assists, while Jamie Jones is posting 13.7 ppg, to go along with a team-best 7.5 rpg. Portland State shot 50.8 percent in its last contest, but still suffered an 80-77 setback to Seattle. The Vikings however, made just 3-of-19 attempts from behind the arc, and also committed 24 turnovers in the loss. Julius Thomas led the way with 19 points, while Jones tallied 18 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. As for Waters, he finished with 15 points.
The Grizzlies got the better of Portland State earlier this season, but look for the Vikings to bounce back with a win this evening on their home floor.
