GAME NOTES: The Siena Saints will try to extend the nation's longest winning streak tonight, as they clash with the Niagara Purple Eagles in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Gallagher Center.
Winners of 15 straight, the Saints locked up at least a share of the MAAC regular-season title after nipping Fairfield, 69-67, on Monday. Siena, which will be the No.1 seed in the MAAC Tournament for the third straight year, is now a healthy 21-4 overall. The Saints are set to kick off a four-game road trip tonight and they have won five straight as the visiting team.
As for the Eagles, they too were in action on Monday, only they came up short, 70-62, at Rider. The loss snapped a two-game win streak and dropped Niagara to 13-13 overall and just 6-8 in conference play.
In regard to the all-time series, Siena grabbed a 41-40 lead over Niagara following an 83-65 triumph in the first meeting of the season on January 9th.
The Saints shot a solid 48.3 percent from the floor, as they clipped Fairfield earlier in the week. Edwin Ubiles led the charge with an 18-point effort, while Ryan Rossiter notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards. Alex Franklin and Clarence Jackson also got involved, chipping in with 12 points apiece. For the season, Franklin leads the Saints in scoring at 16.2 ppg and he is also grabbing 7.9 rpg. Ubiles checks in with 15.7 ppg, while Rossiter averages a double-double with 14.1 ppg and a team-best 10.5 rpg. Jackson is another option for the Saints at 13.8 ppg, and Ronald Moore runs the show with a team-high 8.0 apg to his credit.
The Eagles made only 35.5 percent of their attempts from the field and just 9- of-19 at the foul line, as they were downed by Rider on Monday. Niagara also turned the ball over 18 times and those giveaways resulted in 18 points for Rider. Tyrone Lewis guided the team in the loss with 17 points on 5-of-11 three-pointers, while Bilal Benn turned in a double-double of 10 points and 12 boards. On the campaign, Lewis leads Niagara in scoring at 16.3 ppg and he is also grabbing 4.5 rpg. Benn is close to averaging a double-double with 13.5 ppg and a team-best 9.8 rpg, and Rob Garrison pitches in with 10.9 ppg. Anthony Nelson chips in 10.3 ppg and he runs the offense by handing out a team-best 4.9 apg.
Siena is on a major roll and its balance and solid all-around play should help extend the team's run with a win over Niagara tonight.
