GAME NOTES: Tennessee State hopes to start the foundation for a winning streak tonight, as the Tigers host the Austin Peay Governors in an Ohio Valley Conference affair at the Gentry Center.
Tennessee State ended a seven-game skid by defeating UT-Martin on the road, 74-68, on February 6th. Prior to the victory, the Tigers were losers of 12 of 13 contests. The win improved their conference record to a still dismal 2-11.
Austin Peay lost a close battle at Murray State, 65-63, last Saturday. The defeat snapped a four-game win streak for the Governors, and it dropped their conference record to 8-5.
Austin Peay leads the all-time series between the two teams, 40-21, including a competitive 79-77 home victory on January 16th. Anthony Campbell's double- double of 17 points and 13 rebounds helped the Govs sneak by Tennessee State. The Tigers were led by solid efforts from Josh Sain and Jacquan Nobles, both netting 20 points in the loss.
Jacquan Nobles led the way for Tennessee State in the recent win over UT- Martin with 20 points, while Wil Peters netted 19. The Tigers found themselves trailing 36-27 at the intermission, but went on an offensive attack and poured in 47 second-half points to march on to victory. Nobles is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.0 ppg, while Josh Sain leads the way with 13.1 ppg. Sain, however, is out of action due to disciplinary reasons. Noble is also impressive from beyond the arc, hitting on 46.9 percent (53-of-113) of his three-point attempts. Robert Covington drops 9.3 ppg, while leading the team by grabbing 5.6 rpg.
Austin Peay is led by Wes Channels' 16.1 ppg and Anthony Campbell's 15.5 ppg on the season. John Fraley leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 7.1 rpg, while adding 9.0 ppg. Campbell sunk 20 points in a heart-breaking defeat last Saturday for the Governors as a last-second bucket propelled Murray State to a victory as time expired. Austin Peay's defense was lackluster in the second half, allowing Murray State to connect on 46.4 percent of its shots after taking a 33-30 advantage into the intermission.
The Governors want to rid themselves of the bad taste in their mouth following the loss at Murray State, and with Tennessee State's vulnerability at home, look for Austin Peay to roll to an easy victory.
