GAME NOTES: The Cincinnati Bearcats and Connecticut Huskies are slated for a Big East Conference showdown today at the XL Center in Hartford.
Back-to-back losses have dropped Cincinnati to 14-9 overall and 5-6 in league play. The Bearcats have been idle since last Sunday when they were clearly outclassed in a 71-54 loss to Syracuse. Cincinnati has played seven true road games thus season, and six of those have resulted in defeat.
It is ironic that the most recent game for UConn also came against Syracuse, as the Huskies fell to the second-ranked Orange on Wednesday by a 72-67 final. Connecticut has clearly hit a rough patch, as the team has lost four of its last five games to fall to 14-10 overall and 4-7 in conference. Fortunately, the Huskies have played much better at home than on the road, boasting a 13-2 record entering tonight's affair.
Connecticut has won all five previous meetings with Cincinnati.
Overall this season, Cincinnati is scoring 70.5 ppg while limiting opponents to 65.7 ppg. In league games alone, however, the Bearcats are generating a less impressive 67.5 ppg while permitting 70.4 ppg to foes. Through 23 games, freshman Lance Stephenson leads UC with 11.9 ppg. Deonta Vaughn is close behind with 11.6 ppg, and his output would be better if not for 39.7 percent shooting from the floor. The third and final double-digit scorer in the fold is Yancy Gates with 10.5 ppg, and he is pulling down 6.6 rpg while shooting 55.9 percent from the field. In the 17-point loss to Syracuse last time out, Cincinnati surrendered 51.1 percent shooting to the Orange while being outscored 15-9 from the foul line. Ibrahima Thomas led the way for the Bearcats with 13 points.
Jerome Dyson has led UConn in scoring in four consecutive games, and he is averaging 19.0 ppg to go along with 110 assists for the season. Stanley Robinson checks in with 16.2 ppg and 7.5 rpg, while Kemba Walker is netting 13.4 ppg and had handed out 141 assists. Rounding out a foursome of double- digit scorers is Gavin Edwards with 10.8 ppg, and he has come off the bench in 21 of the team's 24 outings. The Huskies are posting 72.2 ppg while surrendering 66.9 ppg to opponents. Against Syracuse, they connected on only 38.8 percent of their field goal attempts, including a 4-of-16 effort from three-point range. They were outscored 23-11 from the foul line and turned the ball over 17 times. Considering all of the negatives, it is surprising that UConn was able to stay so close on the road. Dyson tallied 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists in that affair.
Expect UConn to put one in the win column today. The Huskies are far more talented than they have shown in recent weeks.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
