GAME NOTES: Fresh off their biggest win of the season, the Penn Quakers resume their five-game homestand tonight by hosting the Columbia Lions in Ivy League action at The Palestra.
The Quakers shook the Ivy League last night, as they stunned two-time defending champion Cornell with a convincing 79-64 result. Penn, which had 17 less wins than Cornell heading into the contest, won for the first time in seven home games this season. The Quakers are now 3-2 in Ancient Eight play after going just 1-13 against non-conference foes.
The Lions meanwhile, kicked off a four-game road trip last night with a 55-45 setback at Princeton. It was the second loss in a row for Columbia, which is now 8-13 overall and 2-5 within the conference.
As for the all-time series, Penn holds a 133-82 advantage over Columbia, and the teams have split a pair of meetings each of the last two seasons.
The Lions shot a horrific 22.2 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes, as they were outscored 31-18 in the second half of a 55-45 loss at Princeton last night. Noruwa Agho guided Columbia in the loss with 15 points, although he went just 4-of-17 from the floor and just 1-of-5 from behind the arc. Agho has been one of the better players in the Ivy up to this point and going into last night's game he was averaging 17.7 ppg, while shooting 48.4 percent from the field and an even better 51.6 percent from three-point distance. He is still the lone player on the team averaging in double figures.
Jack Eggleston dropped in a career-high 24 points and Penn knocked off Cornell last night. Eggleston, who came into the game averaging 12.3 ppg and 6.6 rpg, finished the night 4-of-5 from downtown and with five rebounds. Zack Rosen, the team's leading scorer at 16.7 ppg prior to the win, also enjoyed a big game with 22 points and five helpers. The Quakers led just 32-31 at the break, but shot a scorching 62.5 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes for the 15-point win. The team also had great success from beyond the arc, where it went 11-of-21.
Penn is coming off a huge win and it should be able to build off that with another victory over the Lions tonight.
