GAME NOTES: Ivy League powers collide at Jadwin Gym this evening, as the Cornell Big Red and Princeton Tigers meet for the 211th time.
Eight straight wins and a 20-3 overall record had Cornell close to earning a spot in the Top-25. Those hopes were dashed last night, however, as the Big Red fell to Penn in a 79-64 final. They are now 6-1 in league play and hope to improve an 8-3 record in true road games tonight.
As for Princeton, it remained perfect in Ivy League play with a 55-45 triumph over Columbia last night. With the win, the Tigers moved to 14-5 overall, including 5-0 in conference and 6-1 in front of the home crowd. They enter tonight's tilt with a seven-game win streak.
Princeton owns a 134-76 series lead over Cornell, but the Big Red have won eight of the last 10 meetings.
Through 24 games, Cornell is scoring 76.2 ppg on 47.1 percent shooting from the floor while limiting opponents to 64.3 ppg on 41.1 percent field goal efficiency. The Big Red have done a great deal of damage from three-point range, as their 41.2 percent accuracy from behind the arc is highly impressive. Ryan Wittman leads Cornell with 17.2 ppg on the strength of the 75 three-pointers that he has hit, and Jeff Foote checks in with 12.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. As for Louis Dale, he rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers with 11.3 ppg. The biggest problem for the Big Red last night was that it was outscored by Penn 15-0 to start the second half. Wittman and Dale scored 16 points apiece in the setback.
Princeton is not an explosive offensive team by any means, as it is scoring a modest 59.3 ppg. Fortunately, the club has been able to limit opponents to 52.5 ppg on 39.5 percent shooting from the field. Douglas Davis is averaging 13.5 ppg on the strength of his 41.4 percent shooting from three-point range for Princeton, and Dan Mavraides adds 11.4 ppg. Last night, the Tigers held Columbia to 34 percent field goal accuracy while also earning advantages in both rebounding and points from the foul line. Davis scored 15 points to lead his team, and Ian Hummer pitched in 11 points off the bench.
Cornell is clearly the best team in the Ivy League despite last night's hiccup and will prove it on the road tonight. Expect the Big Red to pull away in the second half.
