GAME NOTES: The Furman Paladins hope to snap a two-game skid as they head to Chattanooga to take on the Mocs in a Southern Conference clash at McKenzie Arena.
Furman has struggled against Southern Conference foes lately, losing its last outing, 76-65, at home against Wofford. The defeat marked the team's second straight loss, and its seventh defeat in the last ten affairs, all against conference rivals.
Chattanooga comes into tonight's affair hoping to bounce back after receiving 78-54 a beating on its home court by Samford on Wednesday night. Prior to the loss, the Mocs were winners of two straight, which ended a four-game losing streak. The Mocs stand at 5-6 in conference play and are in search of their third conference win in their last four attempts.
Chattanooga leads the all-time series with the Paladins, 46-23. Tonight's showdown marks the 70th all-time meeting and is the first between the two teams this season. Furman defeated the Mocs, 72-70, on February 7th of last year, snapping a three-game losing streak to Chattanooga.
Ty Patterson scored 15 points for the Mocs in their 78-54 loss to Samford on Wednesday night. Chattanooga connected on a lackluster 29.5 percent of its field goals on the night, while the team manages a 42.6 percent effort from the floor for the season. Samford was able to have its way with Chattanooga's defense, sinking 61 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 15-of-24 showing from beyond the arc. The loss put the Mocs' conference mark at 5-6, and its overall record at 13-13. Patterson leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.7 ppg, followed by Ricky Taylor's 11.0 ppg. Opponents net an average of 70.4 ppg, while the Mocs score 69.4 ppg. Ridge McKeither leads the team on the boards, grabbing 5.8 rpg.
Furman held a slim 30-29 lead at intermission against Wofford on Wednesday night, but the Paladins' defense gave up a 14-3 run out of the chute in the second stanza, ultimately leading to the team's eighth Southern Conference defeat, 76-65. Justin Dehm led the way for Furman, scoring 12 points, while Colin Reddick added 10. The Paladins were outrebounded, 40-26, in the affair, while Wofford also outscored Furman in the paint, 28-14. Amu Saaka leads the Paladins in scoring for the season, netting 15.9 ppg, while Jordan Miller chips in 13.9 ppg. Saaka also leads the way on the boards, averaging 7.2 rpg. Furman hasn't had much luck when traveling to McKenzie Arena over the years, posting a 3-23 record in its last 26 trips to Chattanooga.
Both teams come into this game hoping to get back on track after disappointing defeats. Chattanooga holds a 10-4 record at home, and is especially successful when the Paladins come to town. Expect that success to continue tonight in a hard-fought SoCon clash.
