GAME NOTES: The two teams holding down the last spots in the Atlantic 10 Conference hit the hardwood at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx today, as the Fordham Rams entertain the Colonials of George Washington.
The Rams have been simply woeful this season with a mere two wins in 22 opportunities, topping only Sacred Heart and Stony Brook during the first seven games of the campaign. Since then Fordham has dropped a total of 15 in a row and is winless in conference play as a result. On Wednesday night, the Rams were turned away by St. Bonaventure on the road by a score of 72-61.
The last month has been hard on the Colonials as well, the team winning just one game during that stretch, that being a 67-62 overtime bid versus Saint Louis at home. The squad is currently fighting through a three-game slide following a 70-63 defeat at the hands of Duquesne last weekend. At a mere 2-7 in A-10 action, GW is ahead of only Fordham in the league standings.
George Washington leads the all-time series by a count of 17-5, taking an 87-62 win from the Rams in the most recent meeting last season.
The Colonials did themselves in last weekend when they shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half and only 34.3 percent for the entire meeting with Duquesne. Lasan Kromah recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and reserve Dwayne Smith had one of his own with 14 points and 10 boards as well, while backup Bryan Bynes tacked on 11 points in the losing effort. Kromah is one of two players scoring in double figures this season for the GW, posting 11.1 ppg as he trails only Damian Hollis who is putting up 13.8 ppg. Between the pair they also account for eight rebounds per game on a team that doesn't necessarily have a single dominant man in the paint who can do the job from one game to the next. Nevertheless, at this stage of the season the Colonials are still beating opponents on the glass by almost four rebounds per game.
Brenton Butler dropped in a game-high 26 points, shooting 4-of-9 behind the three-point line and 8-of-10 at the free-throw line, but it still didn't make a difference because Fordham was again destined for the loss column. Fahro Alihodzic accounted for 14 points and seven rebounds, followed by Chris Gaston with 10 points, 14 boards and five blocked shots, but he came dangerously close to a dubious triple-double with his nine turnovers on the night. Gaston is by far the most productive player on the Fordham roster this season, currently averaging a double-double with 18 points and 10.8 rebounds per contest, but for some reason he has found it necessary to leak out to the perimeter where he has shot only 2-of-20 and has also played fast and loose with the ball far too often with his 98 turnovers over 22 games. Because of all those miscues, the team as a whole is averaging almost 16 turnovers per game at the moment.
Even though the Colonials are far from a dominant team this season and are almost on the same level as Fordham in the league standings, George Washington need only track Butler and Gaston in order to get back into the win column today.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
