GAME NOTES: The Appalachian State Mountaineers will host the Georgia Southern Eagles in a Southern Conference inter-divisional skirmish this afternoon in Boone.
Georgia Southern hasn't been on the court since last Saturday, when the Eagles fell at Davidson 84-74. They've now lost three straight and four of their last five games, to stand at 6-19 overall. With a 3-9 conference mark, the Eagles are sitting in the Southern Division basement. Georgia Southern is winless in 14 road games this season.
Appalachian State comes into today's game leading the SoCon's Northern Division race with a 9-4 mark, one game up on Western Carolina. Like Georgia Southern, the Mountaineers played at Davidson in their last start and prevailed 66-56 on Thursday to pick up their third straight win. Appalachian State is 15-10 overall and 9-3 at the Holmes Center this season.
Georgia Southern was a 68-65 homecourt winner when the two teams met on January 20th. The Mountaineers still lead the series 19-16.
Georgia Southern got 23 points from Willie Powers in the Davidson loss, Rory Spencer added 18 points, and Colby Wohlleb chipped in 14. The Eagles had a five-point lead at one stage of the first half, but Davidson rallied to take the lead at halftime, before going on to the win. Powers is the top scorer on the ballclub at 15.0 points per game. He's shooting 44.2 percent from the floor and 85.1 percent from the foul line. Powers is also dealing out 5.0 assists per contest, leading the conference in assists and ranking seventh in scoring. Antonio Hanson is producing 11.7 ppg, while shooting 81.8 percent from the line. Johntavius Rucker is the top rebounder in the Georgia Southern camp at 4.7 rpg, while Spencer is doing a little bit of everything, with 4.3 rpg, to go with 9.2 points per contest. He's also shooting 49.2. percent from the floor. The Eagles are shooting 41.7 percent as a team, while producing 68.6 ppg. However, they are allowing a generous 77.2 ppg.
Appalachian State got another big night from Donald Sims on Thursday, leading the way with 25 points. Kellen Brand and Marcus Wright added 10 each. The Mountaineers actually trailed 30-28 at halftime, but shot 60.9 percent from the floor in the second half to pick up the win. Sims leads the Southern Conference in scoring at 19.4 ppg. He's also leading the country in foul shooting at 95.1 percent, and hitting 47.1 percent from the floor. Brand is averaging 10.1 ppg. Isaac Butts is second in the conference in rebounding at 8.1 boards per contest, while Ryann Abraham is dealing out 2.6 apg. Appalachian State is scoring 74.2 ppg, while shooting 47.2 percent from the floor and 37.7 percent from long range. The Mountaineers are giving up 70.8 ppg, at the other end of the floor.
Appalachian State is closing in on securing a bye through the first round of the conference tournament. That's a powerful incentive to get over on Georgia Southern, which has struggled on the road all year long.
