GAME NOTES: The 20th-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets wrap up a brief two- game road trip, as they invade the Lawrence Joel Coliseum for an ACC showdown with Wake Forest in Winston-Salem this evening.
Paul Hewitt's Yellow Jackets opened the road trip with a heart-breaking 64-62 loss at Miami-Florida. With the setback to the Hurricanes, Tech is now just 5-5 in league play, a full three games behind league leading Duke.
Dino Gaudio's Demon Deacons have quietly gone about their conference business this year. The team currently brings a three-game win streak into this game, including a 92-85 shootout win over Boston College on Tuesday. The win pushed Wake's ACC ledger to a healthy 7-3 on the year, still well within striking distance of the Blue Devils (8-1).
The Yellow Jackets are seeking the regular season sweep of the Demon Deacons after routing Wake Forest in Atlanta back on January 28th, 79-58. Georgia Tech has won four of the last five meetings to close the gap in the series lead for Wake Forest to 35-33.
James Dews launched a buzzer beater for Miami that proved to be the difference this week and sent the Yellow Jackets to a two-point loss in a crucial ACC affair. The Yellow Jackets had no one to blame but themselves however, as the team shot a mere .387 from the floor and an unforgiving .500 from the free- throw line (8-of-16). Brian Oliver led the offensive charge for Tech, coming off the bench with 19 points in 22 minutes of work. Gani Lawal had the only other significant performance, recording a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds. On the year, Georgia Tech has been much more efficient with the basketball, converting 47 percent of its shots and putting up a healthy 75.0 ppg. Lawal is the team-leader in both scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (9.3 rpg). He is aided in the frontcourt by freshman Derrick Favors (11.3 ppg, 8.4 rpg). Zachery Peacock (10.0 ppg) is a solid contributor off the bench as well, while Iman Shumpert (9.8 ppg, team-high 76 assists) runs things at the point.
The Demon Deacons are another offensive-minded ACC squad, averaging 75.3 ppg on a steady .454 shooting. Like the Yellow Jackets, Wake's leader resides in the frontcourt in the form of Al-Farouq Aminu, who is averaging a double- double, pacing Wake in both scoring (16.4 ppg) and rebounding (11.0 rpg). Perimeter balance comes in the form of guards Ishmael Smith (13.2 ppg, team- high 132 assists) and C.J. Harris (11.0 ppg). The rest of the starting five consists of guard L.D. Williams (8.8 ppg) and center Chas McFarland (7.5 ppg, 7.6 rpg). Wake Forest converted a season-high 57 percent from the floor and held off Boston College for its third straight victory. Aminu led all scorers with 22 points. McFarland and Williams added 14 points apiece, with McFarland completing a double-double with 11 boards. Gary Clark came off the bench to chip in 11 points, while Smith just missed a double-double of his own with nine points and 11 assists.
Tech soundly beat Wake a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta, but the tables may be turned in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons are hot right now and going with the hot team is not a bad thing to do.
