GAME NOTES: Losers of a season-high five straight games, the Hawaii Warriors try yet again to log their first official road win of 2009-10 as they challenge the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in Western Athletic Conference action at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston tonight.
Hawaii, which has won just once in the last eight games, is 0-5 away from home this season and is also near the bottom of the WAC standings with a record of 2-8. The last time the team was in action was a week ago when the Warriors were dealt a 61-51 loss by Fresno State at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
As for the Bulldogs, they were once leading the WAC but they have now alternated wins and losses over the last six games and have fallen off the pace. On Monday night, the program was defeated by New Mexico State at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces by a scant two points, 70-68, dropping the group to 3-2 in WAC road games this season.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, LaTech holds an 11-7 edge over the Warriors after posting a 65-60 win out on the island last month in the first meeting of the season.
Roderick Flemings scored a team-best 21 points, leading all scorers in the game in fact, but still the Warriors suffered the 10-point home loss last weekend. Flemings shot 9-of-17 from the floor, but missed all three of his three-point tries and was 3-of-6 at the charity stripe. As a team, the Warriors were only 2-of-14 on the perimeter and 7-of-13 at the line as they scored a season-low in points. Adding insult to injury for the Rainbows is news that Jeremy Lay is now lost for the season due to surgery that he needs to repair a hernia. Even though he was shooting just 32.4 percent from the field and 22.2 percent behind the three-point line, Lay was still third in scoring in conference games with his 8.5 ppg and was second on the assists list with 32 dishes in those 10 outings. The loss means even more pressure falls on Flemings (15.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg) to direct the offense for the squad. Perhaps Hawaii might finally get something out of Petras Balocka who overall this season is averaging 7.5 ppg and 8.1 rpg, but in WAC action has watched those numbers fall to a mere 3.9 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
No one denies that Louisiana Tech is a force to be reckoned with in the WAC this season, but last weekend the Bulldogs did themselves in as they shot just 8-of-18 at the free-throw line and picked up a mere two points from their reserves in a two-point road loss to New Mexico State. Magnum Rolle did his part with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kyle Gibson filled his stat line with 16 points, eight boards and seven assists. Fellow starters DeAndre Brown and Jamel Guyton tacked on 15 and 10 points, respectively, in the losing effort. Gibson has been doing it all for the Bulldogs this season, from his 21.3 ppg and 4.5 rpg to his 81 assists and 27 steals, yet he is just one of five players scoring in double figures for the squad in 2009-10 and that has to be a comfort to him knowing that he doesn't always have to be the star of the show. Rolle accounts for 14.8 ppg and 9.0 rpg and Olu Ashaolu adds even more power in the paint with his 11.2 ppg and 8.6 rpg. Guyton (11/8 ppg) has been huge for the team out on the perimeter where he has converted 50-of-125 opportunities, second only to Gibson who has 54 triples to his credit right now.
Even if Lay were available for the Warriors tonight, the fact remains that Hawaii is simply not a good team away from home and even at the Stan Sheriff Center this season there are some serious concerns. Needless to say, barring some unforeseen disaster, this is a meeting that belongs to the Bulldogs.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
