GAME NOTES: The Hofstra Pride and the UNC Wilmington Seahawks are set to do battle in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt.
Hofstra was most recently in action on Wednesday when it knocked off Drexel by a 75-64 final. The Pride have won four of their last five games to move to 13-13 overall and 6-8 in league play. Tonight, they hope to improve a 3-7 mark in true road affairs.
The good news for UNC Wilmington is that it was able to knock off Towson on Thursday, 80-72. On a down note, the squad had lost four in a row prior to that affair, and it owns a lowly 8-17 overall record, including 4-10 in CAA action. Of the 12 true road games that the Seahawks have played thus far, nine have ended in defeat. They are 4-6 at home this year.
The Pride crushed the Seahawks by a 93-54 final on January 27th, but UNCW still owns a 12-8 edge in the all-time series.
Charles Jenkins poured in 32 points for Hofstra in the victory over Drexel on Wednesday, and Chaz Williams pitched in with 20 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Greg Washington pulled down 12 rebounds, and his five blocks enabled him to break Hofstra's career (180) and single-season (69) records in that category. The Pride shot just 34.9 percent against the Dragons, but they limited Drexel to 31.1 percent. A 53-46 rebounding advantage clearly helped the cause, as did 25 points from the foul line. Through 26 games, Jenkins is the only double-digit scorer on the Hofstra roster, as he is netting 19.3 ppg to go along with 99 assists and 47 steals. The Pride are generating 67.8 ppg while allowing 65.8 ppg to foes.
UNC Wilmington is scoring 66.3 ppg this season while allowing 70.6 ppg. The Seahawks are getting 13.8 ppg from Chad Tomko, their leading scorer, but his 39.9 percent shooting from the floor could certainly stand some improvement. Tomko also leads the club with 106 assists and 35 steals. The only other double-digit scorer in the fold is John Fields, who checks in with 10.8 ppg on 53.2 percent shooting and a club-high 9.2 rpg. Tomko exploded for 22 points against Towson, and Ahmad Grant posted 18 points. Dominique Lacy pitched in 10 points for the Seahawks, who earned an 18-8 edge in points from the foul line.
Although UNCW has the advantage of playing at home tonight, the edge goes to Hofstra. Jenkins and Williams will be too much for the Seahawks to handle.
