GAME NOTES: The 11th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers will try to bounce back from their first home loss of the campaign, as they host the Indiana Hoosiers today in a Big Ten tilt at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers carried an 18-game home winning streak into Tuesday's bout with Illinois, but some offensive struggles brought that run to an end with a 63-56 setback. The defeat hurt in more ways than one, as Wisconsin fell a game back of four other teams for the top spot in the Big Ten at 8-4. Still, the Badgers are 18-6 overall and they have done a good job of avoiding back-to-back losses all season long.
As for the Hoosiers, they continued to struggle and were downed, 69-52, by nationally-ranked Ohio State on Wednesday. It marked the fifth consecutive loss for Indiana, which is now 9-14 overall and just 3-8 within the conference.
Indiana leads the all-time series with Wisconsin, 93-59, but the Badgers swept both meetings a season ago. These two teams will meet again on February 25th in Bloomington.
The Hoosiers shot a lackluster 37.0 percent from the floor and went only 7- of-14 at the foul line, as they were handled by Ohio State on Wednesday. Indiana also coughed up the ball 14 times, while forcing the Buckeyes into only six turnovers. Christian Watford guided the team in defeat with 15 points and seven boards, while Jordan Hulls and Verdell Jones III checked in with 13 and 11 points, respectively. On the season, Jones III is averaging 14.7 ppg for the Hoosiers and he also distributes 3.3 apg. Watford helps remove some of the burden placed on Jones III, as he contributes 12.5 ppg and a team-high 5.9 rpg.
The Badgers shot a horrific 25.8 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes, as they were knocked off by Illinois earlier in the week. Wisconsin, which led 35-33 at the break, went just 5-of-18 from long range and finished with only 21 points in the second stanza. Jason Bohannon paced the squad in the loss with 15 points and six boards, while Trevon Hughes chipped in with 12 points. Hughes is averaging an even better 15.3 ppg for the season and he is dangerous from three-point land, shooting at a 39.2 percent clip. Bohannon, a 38.3 percent three-point shooter, helps out Hughes and the rest of the team by scoring 11.3 ppg.
Wisconsin is just the better team all-around and should rebound from a rare home loss with a win over the slumping Hoosiers today.
