GAME NOTES: The Golden Flashes will try to continue their dominance over Buffalo when Kent State battles the Bulls this afternoon in a Mid-American Conference tussle at Alumni Arena.
The Golden Flashes have won 23 of the 28 matchups against Buffalo, and that includes a convincing, 89-54 decision over the Bulls back in January.
Kent State has been golden over the past couple of weeks, winning eight straight games, including a 76-42 decision over Ball State on Wednesday. With the win Kent State pushed its MAC ledger to a league best 9-2 on the year.
As for the Bulls, they brought their conference record to 6-5 on the season with an 84-67 victory over Eastern Michigan. It was the second straight win for Buffalo, which is a mediocre 5-4 at home this season.
The Golden Flashes can attribute their success on the season to their play defensively, as Kent State is limiting opponents to just 63.4 ppg. The last time Kent State was on the floor the team held Ball State to just 42 points, en route to a convincing victory. Kent State was also solid offensively, as the team shot 43.3 percent from the floor, and finished 9-of-21 from behind the arc. Chris Singletary and Anthony Simpson scored 11 points apiece, while Justin Greene posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Greene has been the best player on the floor for KSU, as the forward is posting 13.4 ppg, to go along with a team-high 6.4 rpg. Singletary comes into this matchup contributing 11.3 ppg.
It was a stampede by the Bulls in their last contest, as they shot a staggering 66.7 percent from the floor, en route to a commanding win over Eastern Michigan. Rodney Pierce poured in 27 points and dished out five assists for Buffalo, while Mitchell Watt added 14 points. Pierce has been the best player on the floor for Buffalo, as the guard is posting 19.0 ppg on the season, to go along with 70 assists. Calvin Betts is the only other player netting double figures and comes into this game with 11.1 ppg and a team-best 7.3 rpg. As a whole, the Bulls have been respectable at the offensive end of the court and come into this contest netting 74.0 ppg.
The Bulls are coming off an outstanding showing, but they will likely take a step back against a very tough defensive squad in Kent State. It should be a close matchup, but look for the Golden Flashes to grab a narrow win on the road.
