GAME NOTES: The 22nd-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores are heavily favored in today's SEC clash with an LSU squad that has yet to win a conference game or a road tilt this season.
LSU is 0-10 in SEC play and 0-6 in true road affairs. The Tigers, who are 9-15 overall, haven't won a game since January 4th. Their losing skid was extended to 10 games on Wednesday with an 87-52 setback at Arkansas.
Vanderbilt had lost two of three heading into Tuesday's clash with rival Tennessee. Fortunately, the Commodores played one of their best games of the season in a 90-71 romp over the Vols, enabling them to improve to 18-5 overall and 7-2 in conference. They carry a perfect 12-0 home record into this afternoon's affair.
The Commodores own a 56-48 series lead over LSU, and they have won the last three meetings.
Tasmin Mitchell is the leading scorer for the hapless Tigers this season, as the standout forward is posting 17.2 ppg to go along with 9.8 rpg. Bo Spencer checks in with 15.0 ppg and 64 assists, but his 33.8 percent shooting from the field is downright horrendous. As for Storm Warren, he rounds out a productive trio with 12.0 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Unfortunately, every other player on the roster is averaging less than 4.0 ppg, and the complete lack of depth is the most obvious reason for the team's struggles. LSU is only generating 62.3 ppg on 40.5 percent field goal efficiency, including 27.8 percent from three-point range. Against Arkansas, Mitchell posted 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Zach Kinsley hit 5-of-6 shots from the floor en route to 13 points. Despite Kinsley's efficiency, the team still shot just 37.5 percent collectively while suffering a 40-29 rebounding disadvantage. A 23-4 deficit in points from the foul line hurt as well.
Jermaine Beal paces Vanderbilt with 14.7 ppg this season, and Jeffery Taylor checks in with 13.9 ppg on 52.9 percent shooting from the floor. A.J. Ogilvy, the squad's center, provides 13.4 ppg and 6.2 rpg, while John Jenkins adds 10.4 ppg. The Commodores are generating 78.5 ppg while limiting opponents to 68.3 ppg on 40.7 percent shooting. In the surprising rout of Tennessee, Taylor scored a career-high 26 points, while Beal pitched in 20 of his own. Ogilvy netted 11 points for the Commodores, who shot 52.2 percent from the floor in the first half and scored 18 points from the foul line en route to a 17-point lead at intermission. Over the final 20 minutes, 19 points from the charity stripe enabled Vandy to seal the victory. Tennessee hit only 13 foul shots in the entire game.
This game could get ugly, as there is no way that the Tigers will be competitive on the road. Vanderbilt will score early and often en route to another comfortable victory.
