GAME NOTES: Big Sky Conference action will take place this evening at the Stott Center, when the Portland State Vikings host the Montana State Bobcats.
The Bobcats fell to 7-6 in league play with a 74-69 loss to Eastern Washington on Friday. It was the second straight loss for Montana State, and the fourth in the team's last five matchups.
As for the Vikings, they suffered an 81-76 loss to Montana on Friday. It was the second consecutive setback for Portland State, which is now just 5-6 in Big Sky play.
The Bobcats own a 23-16 edge over Portland State in the all-time series, and that includes a 77-71 decision over the Vikings earlier this season.
The Bobcats were ice cold in their recent loss to Eastern Washington, as the team shot just 38.6 percent from the floor and finished only 6-of-23 from behind the arc. Bobby Howard led the way with 18 points, while Branden Johnson tallied 13 points and nine rebounds. Will Bynum contributed 11 points in the setback. Howard has been the best player on the floor for Montana State, as the forward is producing 13.8 ppg, to go along with 5.3 rpg. Marquis Navarre is helping out with 11.3 ppg, while Erik Rush is netting 11.1 ppg, to go along with 63 assists. The team as a whole comes into this matchup netting a pedestrian 67.9 ppg, behind a 44.3 percent shooting effort.
The Vikings have struggled at the defensive end of the floor this season, as the team is surrendering 80.8 ppg. The poor play defensively has overshadowed the team's performance at the offensive end of the floor, as Portland State is netting 78.7 ppg. Dominic Waters has been the top player on the floor for Portland State, as the guard is pacing the team with 17.8 ppg and 116 assists. Jamie Jones has been a solid force in the paint for the Vikings, as the forward is contributing 14.3 ppg, to go along with 7.7 rpg. Portland State scored 76 points behind a 48.1 percent shooting effort in its last contest, but the team still fell to Montana by a five-point margin. Jones led the way with 26 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks, while Waters added 12 points and nine assists.
The Vikings have struggled tremendously at the defensive end of the floor, but the team should score enough points this evening to grab a victory over Montana State.
