GAME NOTES: The 15th-ranked New Mexico Lobos make their way to Salt Lake City for tonight's Mountain West Conference showdown with the Utah Runnin' Utes at the Huntsman Center.
The Lobos took over atop the MWC standings on Wednesday, as they defeated 23rd-ranked UNLV, 76-66, on the road. The victory avenged an earlier loss to UNLV and improved UNM to 8-2 within the conference and 5-0 versus Top 25 teams this season. Winners of eight straight, the Lobos are now a healthy 22-3 overall on the campaign.
As for the Utes, they too are coming off a victory on Wednesday, producing a 64-55 result at TCU. The triumph ended a three-game slide and pulled Utah within a game of .500 both overall (11-12) and in the MWC (4-5).
Utah leads the head-to-head series with UNM, 78-47, but the Lobos captured a 74-57 victory in the first meeting of the season last month.
The Lobos connected on 45.6 percent of their field-goal chances and 11-of-21 three-point tries, as they bested UNLV on Wednesday. UNM simply dominated the boards, 45-23, including a 17-8 advantage at the offensive end. Roman Martinez and Darington Hobson both tallied 16 points in the win and they also combined for 22 rebounds. Dairese Gary tacked on 15 points and six assists, while Phillip McDonald had 13 points and eight boards. Hobson currently tops the roster in scoring (15.6 ppg) as well as rebounding (8.7 rpg) and assists (4.3 apg). Martinez follows with 13.9 ppg and 6.1 rpg, while Gary checks in with 11.6 ppg and 3.9 apg. McDonald, a 41.0 percent three-point shooter, fills out the list of double-figure scorers with 11.3 ppg.
The Utes went 8-of-15 from behind the arc and 16-of-18 at the foul line on their way to a 64-55 win over TCU on Wednesday. Utah was also solid on defense, holding TCU to just a 36.0 percent shooting effort from the field. Marshall Henderson poured in 24 points and grabbed six caroms to lead the way, while Carlon Brown chipped in with 13 points. Brown currently paces the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg and he also has 27 steals to his name. Henderson is next in line with 12.1 ppg and he is followed by Jay Watkins, who nets 10.2 ppg. Luka Drca also gets involved, as he produces 10.0 ppg and a team-best 3.6 apg for Utah.
The Lobos are on a major run right now and they should be able to push past Utah tonight, although their is a chance the team could let up a bit after the big win over UNLV.
