GAME NOTES: State and Big 12 Conference rivals do battle in Stillwater this afternoon, as the Oklahoma State Cowboys entertain the Oklahoma Sooners.
Considering the fact that Oklahoma has posted only one win in six true road games this season, there is reason for doubt heading into this affair. The Sooners have lost four of their last six outings overall, including a 72-71 setback against Texas Tech on Tuesday. The club is now 13-10 overall and 4-5 in Big 12 action.
As for Oklahoma State, it has suffered three consecutive defeats to fall to 16-7 overall and 4-5 in conference. The team has been idle since last Saturday when it fell, ironically, to the same Texas Tech team that just beat Oklahoma. The Cowboys lost to the Red Raiders by an 81-74 final, but now return home where they are 11-1 to date.
The first game played between these bitter rivals back in January required an overtime period to be decided, and Oklahoma earned a 62-57 victory. With regard to the all-time series, the Sooners own a 125-90 advantage.
Taking a look at the heart-breaking loss to Texas Tech last time out, Oklahoma shot just 37 percent from the floor in the first half, including 3-of-15 from three-point range, and trailed by eight points at intermission. The Sooners were more efficient in the second half, but the Red Raiders did enough to hold on for the victory. Willie Warren led the way as usual with 18 points and five assists in defeat, while Tony Crocker provided 16 points and 11 rebounds. As for Tiny Gallon, he posted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Overall this season, Warren is scoring 16.2 ppg to go with 84 assists, and Tommy Mason-Griffin, a standout freshman, provides 13.0 ppg and 105 assists. As for Crocker, he adds 11.8 ppg, while Tiny Gallon puts forth 10.4 ppg and 8.0 rpg. The Sooners are generating 73.7 ppg, marginally better than the 71.2 ppg the club is allowing.
James Anderson is one of the most explosive offensive performers in the Big 12 Conference, and the Oklahoma State standout is currently averaging 22.2 ppg. Obi Muonelo provides 12.5 ppg for the Cowboys, while Marshall Moses checks in with 10.4 ppg and 9.7 rpg. Oklahoma State is netting 74.2 ppg while limiting opponents to 66.8 ppg on 41.3 percent shooting from the field, but those strong numbers are more a reflection of the team's play against non-conference opponents as opposed to Big 12 foes. The Cowboys shot just 39.3 percent from the floor against Texas Tech last weekend, including a 9-of-31 effort from three-point range. Perhaps the most obvious contributing factor in the loss was a 36-17 disadvantage in points from the foul line, although 21 turnovers certainly didn't help matters. Keiton Page scored 22 points, while Anderson was held to 10 points.
Expect Oklahoma State to earn a narrow win today, avenging the overtime loss to the Sooners in the first meeting. Anderson is due for a bounce-back effort.
