GAME NOTES: Two teams in the thick of the Atlantic 10 race come together in Philadelphia today, as the 21st-ranked Temple Owls host the Rhode Island Rams at the Liacouras Center.
The Owls enter the contest well rested, as they have had plenty of time to regroup following a 71-54 loss at Richmond a week ago. The defeated snapped a short two-game win streak and dropped Temple to a still solid 19-5 overall. The Owls are also now 7-2 in conference play, as they are one of four teams with just two league losses.
On the flip side, URI was also victimized by Richmond in its last outing, falling 69-67 on Wednesday. The loss ended a four-game win streak by URI, which dipped to a still healthy 19-4 overall. The Rams though, were knocked from a first place tie in the A-10, as they now stand at 7-3 within the conference.
As for the all-time series, Temple holds a commanding 51-15 advantage over URI even after the teams split a pair of meetings a season ago.
Keith Cothran had a chance to give URI a big win, but his three-pointer with one second left rimmed out and the Rams suffered a tough 69-67 loss to Richmond on Wednesday. Cothran was 0-of-4 from long range on the night, though he did manage to finish with 11 points. Delroy James also had 11 points, to go with nine boards for the Rams, who were 3-of-15 from downtown compared to a 9-of-13 effort by the Spiders. James currently ranks second on the squad in scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (5.6 rpg) for the season, while Cothran tops the roster with 15.6 ppg. Lamonte Ulmer is another option for URI and he checks in with 12.1 ppg and a team-high 7.3 rpg.
The Owls have thrived at the defensive end of the court this season, holding opponents to just 57.6 ppg and a mere 38.6 percent shooting from the field. Offensively, the squad is paced by Ryan Brooks, who averages 15.0 ppg. Juan Fernandez, who missed last game with a head injury, adds 12.3 pg and 3.5 apg to the mix, while Lavoy Allen turns in a double-double with 11.1 ppg and a team-high 10.6 rpg. In the squad's prior outing, Temple was outplayed at both ends, as it shot only 32.1 percent from the floor compared to a 57.8 percent effort by Richmond in a 71-54 setback. Allen registered a double-double with 17 points and 19 boards in the defeat, and Ramone Moore also finished with 17 points.
Temple has had plenty of time to get ready for this game and it should be able to clamp down on defense and limit URI in a winning cause.
