GAME NOTES: Locked in a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Richmond Spiders try to continue their strong play this afternoon as they visit the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center.
On Wednesday night, the Spiders posted their fifth straight win and the seventh in eight tries as they slipped by Rhode Island on the road by a final of 69-67. In the process, Richmond advanced to 8-2 in league play, which has the program tied with both Charlotte and Xavier for the lead in the A-10 heading into the weekend.
As for the Bonnies, they too were in action earlier in the week and used the opportunity to defeat Fordham in this building by a score of 72-61 to snap a four-game slide.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Spiders own a 9-3 advantage.
The Spiders appeared destined for defeat against Rhode Island on Wednesday night, starting the game in a 9-0 hole, but a late three-pointer by David Gonzalvez and a layup from Kevin Anderson put them into the win column. One of four players to finish in double figures, Gonzalvez was credited with a game- high 19 points, followed by Anderson with 18, while Dan Geriot and Ryan Butler contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. More than anything else, it has been the defense of Richmond this season that has set the team apart from others in the A-10, holding opponents to a mere 38.6 percent shooting from the floor and 29.1 percent behind the three-point line, all while forcing more than 15 turnovers per contest. Anderson, an 82 percent shooter at the charity stripe, is responsible for 17.7 ppg, followed by Gonzalvez with his 13.4 ppg stemming from a team-best 53 three-point conversions.
Despite gaining a mere eight points off the bench on Wednesday night, the Bonnies still played well enough to come up with the 11-point home win against a floundering Fordham squad. Chris Matthews was responsible for 22 points, one of four starters to score in double figures for the hosts, while Andrew Nicholson accounted for 14 points and eight rebounds. Michael Davenport and Jonathan Hall contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, the latter's seven assists second only to the eight dishes delivered by Ogo Adegboye. A starter in all 21 games in which he has played, Nicholson leads the program in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 16.5 points and 7.7 boards per contest, shooting 59.9 percent from the field along the way. His 44 blocked shots are also the team high, but his mere eight assists this late in the season seem to stick out like a sore thumb. Hall (12.5 ppg) and Matthews (11.7 ppg) help provide the group with their 70.0 ppg.
The Spiders had a close call earlier in the week against the Rams, but expect to see a much larger margin of victory today for the visitors as they continue their dominance at the Reilly Center.
