GAME NOTES: The South Carolina Gamecocks and Georgia Bulldogs are slated to do battle in an SEC clash in Athens this afternoon.
These two teams met two weeks ago in Columbia, and South Carolina earned a thrilling 78-77 victory to take a 47-46 advantage in the all-time series between the teams.
South Carolina has won three of its last four outings to move to 14-9 overall and 5-4 in SEC action. On Wednesday, the Gamecocks defeated a solid Florida squad by a 77-71 final to improve to 11-2 at home. Unfortunately, they are just 1-6 in true road games heading into this tilt.
As for Georgia, it has suffered four losses in the last five games and now sits at 2-7 in conference. The Bulldogs, who are 10-12 overall, were no match for Auburn in Wednesday's road game, as they fell by an 82-63 final. Fortunately, they now return home where they are 9-3 to date.
There is no player in the nation that means more to his respective team than Devan Downey does to South Carolina. Downey has led the team in scoring in 12 consecutive outings, and the diminutive guard is averaging 23.0 ppg to go along with 3.4 apg and 69 assists. Sure, Brandis Raley-Ross contributes a respectable 10.7 ppg, but Downey is always the focus of the offense. The Gamecocks are scoring 73.8 ppg while allowing 69.5 ppg to their opponents. Against Florida on Wednesday, Downey scored 24 points, and Raley-Ross pitched in with 20. The Gamecocks made good on just 38.2 percent of their field goal attempts, but they earned a 19-10 edge in points from the foul line and forced 20 turnovers. For those reasons, the club was able to overcome the Gators' 56 percent field goal efficiency.
There are three double-digit scorers in the fold for Georgia, which is led by a Trey Thompkins. A standout forward, Thompkins is netting 17.0 ppg while pulling down 7.6 rpg. Travis Leslie, who is grabbing 7.0 rpg, provides 14.5 ppg, and Ricky McPhee rounds out the trio with 10.2 ppg. The Bulldogs are generating 68.0 ppg while allowing 68.5 ppg at the defensive end. Leslie was sensational against Auburn on Wednesday, as he finished with 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds Unfortunately, Thompkins fouled out in only 13 minutes of action, and the Bulldogs couldn't survive 19 turnovers or 36.5 percent shooting from the field. They were outrebounded as well in the tilt.
Expect Georgia to avenge the one-point road loss to South Carolina by beating the Gamecocks today. Thompkins is due for a big performance after the poor showing against Auburn.
