GAME NOTES: The surging Marquette Golden Eagles welcome the South Florida Bulls to the Bradley Center in Milwaukee for tonight's Big East Conference clash.
Marquette has won four in a row, which currently represents the second-longest streak in the Big East behind Syracuse (11). The Golden Eagles have scored at least 80 points in three of the four wins, including last Saturday's 82-79 victory at Providence. They've won 11 of 13 at home this season.
USF saw its four-game win streak come to an end in last Sunday's 65-62 setback at Notre Dame. Tonight's contest wraps up a three-game road swing for the Bulls, who are a respectable 7-5 away from home on the year. They'll return to Tampa to host Cincinnati and St. John's in the coming week.
Marquette holds a commanding 14-3 series edge, although the Bulls claimed a 57-56 victory in the most recent meeting last February.
The Bulls committed just five turnovers last Sunday against Notre Dame, but a 10-of-20 effort from the foul line sealed their fate in the loss. They also weren't helped by an off night from leading scorer and Big East Player of the Year candidate Dominique Jones, who had averaged 35 points over the previous four games leading up to Sunday's clash. In fact, Jones had scored at least 20 in nine straight games. But against UND, he was held to just 10 points and also missed a potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer. Chris Howard had a game-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting for USF, while Jarrid Famous finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. In addition to Jones (21.9 ppg), the Bulls have received steady scoring contributions from Famous (11.6 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Howard (10.3 ppg) throughout the season. Second-leading scorer Augustus Gilchrist (18.8 ppg, 7.4 rpg) has been limited to eight games this season due to a sprained ankle, though he has been making progress and is listed as probable for tonight's contest.
Marquette leads the nation in three-point shooting percentage (.424) thanks to a deep stable of players who can stroke it from outside. In conference play, the Golden Eagles are tallying 9.3 treys per contest. They also boast an impressive 1.52 assist-to-turnover ratio, which ranks second in the Big East and fifth in the nation. Lazar Hayward leads the squad with 18.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest. Jimmy Butler checks in with 15.3 points and 6.6 caroms per contest, while Darius Johnson-Odom is averaging 12.8 ppg behind pinpoint 50.5 percent accuracy from beyond the arc (53-of-105). Hayward led all scorers with 28 points at Providence, including two late free throws to clinch it for Marquette. Butler added 19 points, David Cubillan scored 13, and Johnson-Odom finished with 12 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot 51.7 percent as a team.
Gilchrist's return to the starting lineup should certainly provide a nice boost for the Bulls, who face a tough test on the road. However, the Golden Eagles have been playing near flawless basketball of late, and they are 11-2 at home this year.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
