GAME NOTES: The Gaels will try to bounce back from a tough loss to 16th-ranked Gonzaga when Saint Mary's takes on the University of Portland Pilots this evening in a West Coast Conference clash at the Chiles Center.
The Gaels saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with an embarrassing 80-61 setback to Gonzaga on Thursday. The loss dropped the Gaels to 8-2 in conference action and gave the team its first road loss in nine games.
As for the Pilots, they are coming off a 70-56 victory over San Diego. It was the fifth win in the last six games for Portland, which is now 6-3 in league play.
Earlier this season the Gaels grabbed a 77-72 decision over Portland, pushing their lead in the all-time series to a convincing, 50-27 advantage.
The Gaels were s0imply dominated by Gonzaga in their last matchup, as they scored just 61 points in a loss to the Bulldogs. Saint Mary's shot just 37.3 percent from the floor, and finished 6-of-20 from behind the arc. Omar Samhan led the way with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Matt Dellavedova tallied 11 points to go along with eight boards. Despite the poor effort however, the Gaels are still producing at a high level, averaging 80.6 ppg behind a 48.8 percent shooting effort. Samhan has been a terror in the paint for opponents, as the forward is leading the team with 21.6 ppg, 11.1 rpg and 72 blocks. Mickey McConnell is contributing 13.2 ppg and 131 assists, while Dellavedova is posting 12.4 ppg and 117 assists.
Even with leading scorer Nik Raivio out of the lineup, the Pilots have still played well offensively, and head into this game averaging 72.4 ppg. Robin Smeulders is currently leading the team with Raivio sidelined, as the forward is posting 13.1 ppg and 6.7 rpg. T.J. Campbell is also netting 13.1 ppg, to go along with a team-best 124 assists. The last time the Pilots were on the floor the team grabbed a 14-point win over San Diego, after shooting 47.2 percent from the floor. Campbell led the way with 18 points, while Smeulders added a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jared Stohl also tallied 14 points in the win.
The Gaels are coming off a tough setback to Gonzaga, but look for them to bounce back this evening with a strong showing against a Portland squad that simply is not strong enough to hang with Saint Mary's.
