Tennessee-Martin (4-20) at Tennessee Tech (12-13)

GAME NOTES: The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles are set to host the Tennessee- Martin Skyhawks in Ohio Valley Conference action tonight at the Eblen Center in Cookeville.

UT-Martin brings up the rear of the OVC standings at 1-13 in league play, and the Skyhawks are winless in 12 road games this year. On Thursday, they were dealt an 80-68 loss at Jacksonville State. That contest kicked off a stretch in which UTM plays five of its next six games on the road.

Tennessee Tech is fresh off an ugly 94-62 loss at home to Murray State on Thursday. The Golden Eagles have dropped three straight to fall below .500 overall (12-13) and in OVC play (6-8). The three-game skid comes on the heels of a season-best four-game win streak at the end of January.

The Golden Eagles own a 29-10 series edge over UT-Martin, and that includes a 76-63 victory against the Skyhawks earlier this season.

The Skyhawks shot just 39.7 percent from the floor in Thursday's loss to JSU. They also shot themselves in the foot by committing 17 turnovers, in addition to sending the Gamecocks to the foul line 34 times on the night. Marquis Weddle came off the bench and managed a team-high 17 points in the loss. Benzor Simmons and Andres Irarrazabal scored 12 points apiece. Weddle (16.8 ppg) is typically in the starting lineup, but sensing a need to shake things up in the face of a long season, coach Jason James decided to bring his leading scorer off the bench. After Weddle, Simmons is averaging 13.3 points and a team-best 5.7 rebounds per game. Reuben Clayton is next in line with 12.8 ppg, but there is a difference of 6.4 ppg between him and the next leading scorer.

Thursday was a night to forget for the Golden Eagles, who became Murray State's 21st consecutive OVC victim in regular-season play. Between the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, the Racers went on a 14-0 burst that essentially put the game away. Murray State shot a robust 63.5 percent for the game, while the Golden Eagles connected on only 36.7 percent of their total shots. TTU also committed 18 turnovers, which yielded a 25-9 edge to Murray State in points off turnovers. Kevin Murphy scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures for TTU. On the season, Murphy ranks fifth in the OVC in scoring (15.3 ppg) and has reached double figures in 18 straight games. Frank Davis is contributing 14.3 ppg, while Elijah Muhammad is scoring 11.8 ppg.

Expect the Golden Eagles to rebound with a strong effort at home after Thursday's debacle, as they can ill-afford a loss to the last-place Skyhawks.
