GAME NOTES: Sun Belt Conference action will take place this evening at the Mitchell Center when the South Alabama Jaguars host the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns.
The Cajuns saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with a 76-72 setback to Florida Atlantic on Thursday. The loss to the Owls left ULL 8-5 in conference action and dropped the team to a mere 3-9 in road matchups.
The Jaguars needed overtime in their last contest, but the team was able to grab a thrilling, 69-65 victory over FIU. It was just the third win in the last 11 games for South Alabama, which is a mere 6-8 in conference action.
In regard to the all-time series between the two schools on the hardwood, the Cajuns hold a 23-19 edge over South Alabama.
The Cajuns have relied heavily on a trio of players to lead the way offensively. Out of those three performers, it all starts with Tyren Johnson, who is pacing the team with 17.3 ppg and 8.5 rpg. Chris Gradnigo is helping out the team with 14.5 ppg, while Randell Daigle is netting 11.6 ppg, to go along with 58 assists. The last time the Cajuns were in action the team scored 72 points behind a 52.5 percent shooting effort, but still suffered a loss against Florida Atlantic. Johnson led the way in the setback with 19 points and six rebounds, while Daigle and Gradnigo tallied 17 and 15 points, respectively.
As for the Jaguars, they are only producing 68.2 ppg on the season, and that comes on a 41.9 percent shooting effort from the floor. However, the team does possess three solid players, beginning with Tim Williams, who is leading the team with 15.3 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Martino Brock is helping out with 12.0 ppg and 6.6 rpg, while Bryan Sherrer heads into this matchup, posting 10.2 ppg. South Alabama only scored 69 points the last time they were on the floor, but the team still managed to grab an over time victory over FIU. The Jags did not have their best showing though, as the team shot just 33.8 percent from the floor, and finished 4-of-25 from behind the arc. Brock led the way with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Gary Redus tallied 14 points. As for Williams, he finished with 10 points and seven boards in the victory.
Despite losing their last game, the Cajuns have played well of late. However, on the road is where the team has struggled and should continue to do so this evening against South Alabama.
