GAME NOTES: Bitter rivals are slated to do battle in Blacksburg this evening, as the Virginia Cavaliers and Virginia Tech Hokies meet for the second time in less than three weeks.
The first meeting was a thriller, as Tech knocked off the Cavs by a 76-71 final in overtime. Still, the Cavaliers own a 79-51 advantage in the all-time series between the teams.
Virginia was slated to play Maryland on Wednesday, but that game was postponed due to inclement weather. The club is a solid 14-7 overall this season, including 5-3 against ACC competition. The Cavaliers suffered a 64-61 overtime loss to Wake Forest last Saturday, halting a modest two-game win streak.
As for Virginia Tech, it has quietly had a tremendous season, posting 19 wins in 23 outings. The Hokies have won their last three contests, including a 72-52 romp over NC State on Wednesday, and they are now 6-3 in league action. Furthermore, they carry a perfect 12-0 home record into this evening's affair.
Sylven Landesberg is the leading scorer for Virginia this season, as he is netting 18.1 ppg to go along with 61 assists. Landesberg has been particularly potent since the start of ACC action, as he is posting 20.4 ppg against league foes. Mike Scott provides 13.1 ppg and 7.4 rpg overall, and Sammy Zeglinski checks in with 10.0 ppg on 44 percent shooting from three-point range. The Cavaliers are netting 69.6 ppg as a team while allowing 61.0 ppg. In the heart-breaking overtime loss to Wake Forest last weekend, Landesberg scored 28 points on the strength of a 10-of-11 showing from the foul line. Scott pitched in 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who shot a lowly 33.8 percent from the field and were outrebounded by a 46-34 margin.
Malcolm Delaney is averaging 20.0 ppg for Virginia Tech this season, and he has also dished out 92 assists to pace the club in both categories. Dorenzo Hudson checks in with 13.7 ppg, and Jeff Allen provides 11.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg. The Hokies are netting 72.5 ppg through 23 contests, and they have managed to limit opponents to 61.4 ppg on 39.2 percent field goal efficiency. Hudson scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor to lead Virginia Tech over NC State on Wednesday. Delaney netted 15 points in that tilt, and Allen contributed 14 points. As for JT Thompson, he added balance off the bench with 12 points for the Hokies, who connected on 52.9 percent of their field goal attempts and scored 23 points off turnovers.
The edge goes to Virginia Tech tonight, as the Hokies will complete the season sweep with the help of the Blacksburg faithful. Expect Delaney to be the best player on the floor for either team.
