GAME NOTES: Colonial Athletic Association action will take place this evening when the James Madison Dukes host the Virginia Commonwealth Rams at the Convocation Center.
The Rams saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with an 82-77 overtime setback to George Mason. The loss dropped VCU to 9-5 in league play and left the team with a mediocre 5-5 mark on the road.
The Dukes have struggled of late, losing eight of their last 10 games, including four in a row. The last time James Madison was on the floor the team suffered an embarrassing, 64-44 setback to Old Dominion, dropping the Dukes to 3-11 in CAA play.
The Rams have won eight of the last nine matchups against James Madison, and now own a comfortable 40-19 edge over the Dukes in the all-time series.
The Rams have been a dangerous team offensively this season, as VCU is averaging 76.9 ppg on the year. Larry Sanders is pacing the team with 14.9 ppg and a team-best 8.7 rpg, while Joey Rodriguez is posting 12.0 ppg, to go along with 141 assists. Bradford Burgess has also been a solid contributor, as the guard is helping out with 10.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg. The last time VCU was on the floor the team scored 77 points, but still fell to George Mason in overtime. Rodriguez led the way in the setback with 24 points and seven assists, while Sanders added 13 points. Ed Nixon and T.J. Gwynn tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the loss.
The last time the Dukes were on the floor the team scored just 44 points in a loss to Old Dominion. James Madison shot just 32.7 percent from the floor and finished just 1-of-12 from behind the arc. Denzel Bowles was the only player in double figures for JMU, as the forward posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bowles has been the best player on the floor for JMU throughout the season, as the big man is averaging 20.7 ppg, to go along with 9.6 rpg. Julius White is the only other player contributing double figures on the year, as the forward is posting 16.4 ppg, to go along with 5.3 rpg. As a whole however, the Dukes are only averaging 65.3 ppg on the season.
The Rams have dominated the Dukes over the years, and their success against JMU should continue this evening in Harrisonburg.
