GAME NOTES: Two teams tied for third place in the Horizon League standings collide at the Nutter Center tonight, as the Green Bay Phoenix tussle with the Wright State Raiders.
The Phoenix enter the contest on a winning note, as they slipped past Detroit, 64-62, on Thursday. It was the second win in a row for Green Bay, which improved to 17-9 overall and 7-4 on the road. The Phoenix are now 9-5 within the league and just a half-game back of Cleveland State for second place.
Tied with Green Bay for third place in WSU, which improved to 9-5 in conference play with a 68-63 triumph of Milwaukee on Thursday. The victory was the fifth in six games for the Raiders, who are now 16-9 overall and 10-1 on their home floor.
In regard to the all-time series, Green Bay holds a 22-18 edge over WSU and that includes a narrow 68-66 victory in the first meeting of the season.
With a 64-62 victory over Detroit on Thursday, the Phoenix improved to 5-0 in games decided by four points or less this season. The team went 6-of-11 from long range and 18-of-26 at the foul line in the win, in addition to holding Detroit to just a 36.5 percent shooting effort from the field. Rahmon Fletcher led the charge with 16 points and five helpers, while Randy Berry logged 11 points and eight boards. A solid player at both ends, Fletcher paces Green Bay in scoring (16.2 ppg) as well as steals (44) for the season. Bryquis Perine adds 13.1 ppg and a team-best 4.3 apg to the lineup, while Troy Cotton puts forth 12.2 ppg on the strength of 41.4 percent shooting from downtown.
The Raiders shot an efficient 51.0 percent from the floor on their way to a 68-63 victory over Milwaukee on Thursday. WSU also forced 14 turnovers, generating 19 points off those mishaps. Cory Cooperwood tallied 16 points and six boards to lead the way, while Todd Brown posted 15 points. Vaughn Duggins chipped in with nine points and he continues to lead the team in scoring at 14.4 ppg. Brown tacks on 12.9 ppg and 4.4 rpg for WSU, which is forcing 16.2 turnovers per game and holding foes to 60.7 ppg.
WSU has been near perfect at home this season and its tough defense should help in a victory over Green Bay tonight.
