GAME NOTES: The La Salle Explorers have been idle for over a week, and they return to action on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh against Atlantic 10 Conference rival Duquesne.
La Salle has suffered three consecutive defeats to fall to 11-12 overall and 3-6 in conference action. The Explorers suffered a 68-65 loss to Saint Louis on February 6th, and they carry a 4-5 record in true road games into this afternoon's affair.
As for Duquesne, it has suffered losses in two of the last three games to fall to an even 12-12 overall, including a lowly 3-7 in A-10 play. Thursday's matchup with UMass went to overtime, but the result was an 84-80 overtime loss to the Minutemen. Of the 12 wins that Duquesne has registered this season, eight have come at home.
The Explorers own a 35-29 series advantage over the Dukes.
La Salle is scoring 71.1 ppg this season, almost identical to the 71.6 ppg to team is surrendering. Rodney Green is scoring 18.1 ppg to pace the Explorers, and he has dished out 95 assists to go along with 39 steals. Kimmani Barrett provides 13.3 ppg, while Aaric Murray gets 12.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg. Murray, a freshman center, has also blocked 56 shots. Yves Mekongo rounds out a foursome of double-digit scorers with 11.1 ppg. In the narrow loss to Saint Louis last time out, Jerrell Williams scored 21 points before fouling out for La Salle. Williams also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Steve Weingarten added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Mekongo had 11 points. Green was limited to 10 points for the Explorers, who led by 11 points in the first half before slowly falling apart.
The Dukes have one of the best players in the A-10, but Damian Sanders remains relatively unknown to most college basketball fans. Saunders is scoring 15.0 ppg on 50 percent shooting from the field, and he is pulling down 12.2 rpg to go along with 79 blocks and 68 steals. That versatility is unmatched in the conference. Bill Clark posts 12.9 ppg and 6.3 rpg, while Melquan Bolding adds 12.0 ppg. B.J. Monteiro (10.7 ppg) and Eric Evans (10.5 ppg) add balance to the squad. The Dukes are generating 67.5 ppg while holding opponents to 68.5 ppg on 40.3 percent field goal efficiency. In the heart-breaking loss to UMass, Duquesne only shot 39.1 percent from the field and suffered a crippling 60-33 rebounding disadvantage. All five starters reached double figures in scoring in the setback, and Monteiro led the way with 18 points.
Duquesne will win this game today, as Saunders will be too much for La Salle to handle. Expect the Dukes to lead from wire to wire.
