Montana (18-7) at Eastern Washington (7-18)

GAME NOTES: The Montana Grizzlies try to win their sixth straight game today as they clash with the Eastern Washington Eagles in Big Sky Conference play at Reese Court in Cheney.

On Friday night, the Grizzlies picked up an 81-76 win over Portland State on the road for their eighth wins in nine tries, moving the squad to an impressive 9-4 in conference.

The Eagles were also in action two nights ago and they too logged a conference win with a 74-69 decision against Montana State at home. The victory snapped a seven-game slide for a team that has a total of only seven wins on the season.

Montana won the first meeting between these two teams last month with a 79-66 decision at home, which means the all-time series now stands at 57-36 in favor of the Grizzlies.

Anthony Johnson scored 22 points and Ryan Staudacher added 18 as guard play dominated for the Grizzlies in their win on Friday night at the Stott Center in Portland. Will Cherry pitched in with 13 points and five assists and Brian Qvale tallied 11 points and six boards before picking up his fifth foul of the night. Johnson has now led the team in scoring in five straight games and eight of the last nine, so it should be no surprise that he is at the top of the scoring list this season for Montana with his 18.0 ppg. More than just a scorer, Johnson is also first on the unit with his 80 assists and is coming up with almost three and a half rebounds per game as well. Through 25 games, the Grizzlies are outscoring opponents by a solid nine points per contest.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Eagles two nights ago, led by Kevin Winford with his 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, as the squad picked up the win at home over Montana State. Jeffrey Forbes added 17 points, Glen Dean 12, Brandon Moore 11 and eight boards and Mark Dunn turned his 4-of-5 effort from the field into 10 points for the victors as they shot a staggering 20-of-22 at the free-throw line. Dean leads the team in scoring overall this season with his 12.0 ppg, but when it comes to conference play he has stepped up his efforts and is generating close to 15.0 ppg, thanks to his impressive 46.7 percent shooting behind the three-point line in those 11 games. Dunn accounts for 11.2 ppg overall and Forbes another 10.6 ppg, but still the defense is permitting s hefty 77.3 ppg this season.

With players like Johnson and Staudacher handling the ball as much as they do, expect to see the Grizzlies sweep the regular-season series from Eastern Washington.
