GAME NOTES: The Akron Zips will try to remain in the win column when they host the Ohio University Bobcats this afternoon in a Mid-American Conference bout at Rhodes Arena.
The Bobcats head into this game fresh off an 89-76 victory over Central Michigan. It was the second straight win for Ohio, which is now 5-6 in league play.
As for the Zips, they are also coming off a victory over Central Michigan, as they defeated the Chippewas, 56-52 on Tuesday. It was the third straight win for Akron, and the fifth in the team's last six games. With the victory, the Zips pushed their league mark to 8-3 on the year.
The Bobcats own a slim, 30-29 lead over Akron in the all-time series, but the Zips have won five of the last six matchups, including a 67-62 decision earlier this season.
The last time the Bobcats were in action the team shot 49.0 percent from the floor and connected on 35-of-48 attempts from the foul line, en route to a victory over Central Michigan. Armon Bassett led the way with 25 points, while DeVaughn Washington added 24 points. D.J. Cooper contributed 19 points in the win. Bassett has been the top option on the floor for Ohio throughout most of the season, as the guard is leading the team with 14.7 ppg. However, Cooper has also been solid and comes into this game with 13.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg and a team-best 5.6 rpg. As a whole, the Bobcats have been solid at the offensive end of the court, netting 74.3 ppg.
The Zips' success this season can be attributed to their play defensively, as the team is holding the opposition to just 62.6 ppg. Akron's stingy play continued in the recent win over Central Michigan, as the Zips held the Chippewas to a mere 52 points and a 28.6 percent shooting effort. At the other end of the floor Akron was led by Steve McNees, who scored 16 points. Jimmy Conyers and Darryl Roberts posted 11 points apiece. However, on the season the only player netting double figures for Akron has been Brett McKnight, who is averaging 10.2 ppg.
The Zips have relied on their play defensively, and should continue to ride their success at that end of the floor, en route to a win over Ohio.
