GAME NOTES: The Notre Dame Fighting Irish welcome the St. John's Red Storm to the Joyce Center for tonight's Big East Conference showdown.
St. John's had lost five straight games and was desperate for a victory over Louisville on Thursday. The Red Storm got the job done in convincing fashion, as they clipped the Cardinals in a 74-55 final. They are now 13-10 overall, but just 3-8 in conference.
On Thursday, Notre Dame was forced to play without its star forward, Luke Harangody, down the stretch of a 90-87 loss to Seton Hall. That setback halted a two-game win streak for the Fighting Irish, who are now 17-8 overall and 6-6 in Big East action. UND is an impressive 15-2 at home this season.
The Fighting Irish own a 19-15 series advantage over the Red Storm, and the teams split a pair of meetings last season.
DJ Kennedy is the leading scorer for St. John's, as he is netting 15.0 ppg to go along with 6.5 rpg and 73 assists. The only other double-digit scorer in the fold is Dwight Hardy, as he is generating 10.7 ppg. The Red Storm are posting 67.3 ppg while holding opponents to 65.3 ppg, but that positive scoring differential is more a reflection of the Red Storm's play in non- conference games than in league play. Against Louisville, St. John's shot a dreadful 1-of-13 from three-point range, but the club did earn a 21-9 edge in points from the foul line. Kennedy scored 15 points in that game, and Justin Burrell added 14 off the bench. The Red Storm earned a 36-28 rebounding advantage and limited the Cardinals to 20 total field goals.
In the narrow loss to Seton Hall, Harangody injured his leg with just over eight minutes remaining and didn't return. The star power forward had 13 points before exiting and is listed as questionable for today's affair. All five Fighting Irish starters reached double figures in scoring against the Pirates, and Tory Jackson led the way with 25 points and six assists. Tim Abromaitis added 18 points and eight rebounds for UND, which allowed 55 percent shooting to the Pirates, including a 12-of-19 effort from three-point range. Harangody is averaging 24.1 ppg to go along with 10.0 rpg, and he will clearly be missed if he can't play today. Abromaitis is netting 16.6 ppg on the strength of his stellar 48.3 percent shooting from three-point range, and Ben Hansbrough adds 11.7 ppg. The Irish are posting 79.7 ppg while permitting 72.0 ppg to foes.
St. John's has played seven true road games this season, and six of those games have resulted in defeat. Expect another road loss tonight regardless of Harangody's condition.
